I want to talk about a different Rubicon. . .

There is a river in Italy called the Rubicon from which we get the name for among other things, the upcoming EVE expansion, a couple dozen corporate and rock band names, and believe it or not, a variety of lettuce. That river used to be pretty important. It marked the legal boundary between Gaul and Italy proper. Roman law said an army-leading general in the Roman Republic could not cross with his army. To do so was to forfeit your head.

In 49 BC, Julius Caesar got fed up with the actions of the Senate and his political enemy Pompey. He crossed that river with one of his Legions. Upon crossing that river he said “alea iacta est,” which translates to “the die is cast.” Caesar rolled the dice and, win or loose, there was no turning back for him.

On Wednesday this week, another man reached a point of no return and cast his dice. DNSBLACK, in protest of the continuing violations of the EULA and Terms of Service by SOMERblink, announced that he was raffling his character by that name in the exact manner in which SOMERblink has been accused RMTing. The announcement on the EVE-O forums, in the bouillabaisse that is General Discussion, was quickly locked by moderators. Upon further reflection the thread was unlocked but moved under the section of “In-Game Events and Gatherings” in what can only be an attempt to bury it in total obscurity so as to avoid further attention.

While Ceasar was a hero of the Roman people for being the first to bridge the Rein and thereby loot, kill, and plunder all the way up to Britain, DNSBLACK has been mostly EVE famous for bridging cloaky ships through Black Ops battleships and hot dropping anyone and every one for the past 7 years. I say mostly because among other things, the happy go lucky, hard partying, former Marine Non-com, is often recognized for outlandish headgear and being, I believe, the only person to consume an entire six pack on stage at an Alliance Panel. In reality, outside of the party atmosphere of Reykjavik during Fanfest, DNSBLACK is a knowledgeable and insightful man. Don’t let the Fanfest act fool you, the man actually possesses a Bachelors in Science from Ferris State University located in Michigan. This is despite being an avid Buckeyes fan. In addition to exercising real life leadership as a coach in youth, high school, and collegiate athletics, DNSBLACK serves in three positions within his Labor Union, (the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees). He is a Shop Steward, Contract Negotiator, and elected officer within his Local 1609. As such he has participated in numerous grievance disputes and multiple contract negotiations between Labor and Management. Despite a keenly honed ability to parse legalese, DNSBLACK himself will tell you that creating the written word is not his forte. In person however, his spoken word is a engaging and motivating. He is a man whose knowledge of and passion for EVE Online is apparent within the first ten seconds when he speaks about anything EVE related.

Playing Octavius to DNSBLACK’s Caesar, is Argus Sorn, who while not as widely “EVE Famous,” is a widely respected member in the community and is know for his insight and intelligence. Argus, an emergency medicine doctor by trade, has written a number of eloquent posts on the forums.

Other EVE notables who openly support DNSBLACK’s position on SOMER’s legitimized RMT, include Two Step, Shai ‘Hulud, and (oddly enough and despite, some would say, the whole smoking Jagerbomb thing) a number of well known Goons. Even mystery forum alt Frying Doom, who vehemently opposed corp-mate Trebor Daehdoow’s re-election, has gotten behind DNSBLACK’s message.

For DNSBLACK, this is not about Ishukone Scorpions any more, nor about the fairness in which give aways are administered, but about allowing an in game organization to make a real world profit utilizing in game items. It is about an in game entity and third-party for-profit website destroying the very concept of the sandbox that Hilmar himself so brilliantly described in his keynotes this last Fanfest.

Despite the seemingly annual gaffs and blunders by CCP, DNSBLACK or what ever he will be known by now if his characters transfer goes through, maintains a positive view of the future for CCP. Rather, DNSBLACK believes in the people at CCP. DNSBLACK believes in the unique nature of not only CCP’s product, but their people. This is tempered by the realization that CCP and it’s employees must differentiate between CCP the company and their creative process and EVE Online. EVE Online is more than just CCP the company or a product to him, but the living breathing world created by both developers and the players themselves.

If CCP cannot teach it’s own employees what conflict of interest is, follow their own EULA, or put equitable policies in place to avoid blatant favoritism towards individual in-game entities, then perhaps I need to talk to DNSBLACK about raffling my characters as well. Now is not a for time politicking or politicians but of action and leadership. DNSBLACK has show real life leadership that I for one, and many others here by their comments in to past opinion pieces, would like to see on the CSM. I hope that with DNSBLACK’s leadership the community can show solidarity and convince CCP to negotiate an equitable outcome to this problem of in game interests being unfairly influenced by out of game money. Perhaps, with such representation on the CSM, we could be talking about the upcoming expansion Rubicon, instead of crossing one.

WHY?!! will anyone want to attack somer ?

Who is somer, what are they doing?

They are just some very well organized RMT operation. 1st people to notice that started copying them… When it became widely known, because some honest people found the words to explain it to the masses, they suddenly became a victim of a meta game ??? WTF…

The thing I like about Black is he is honest and sincere. Anyone who has spent any time with the man will tell you that. He isn’t doing this with some secret agenda, he’s doing it simply because he believes it.

Good on him, he’s a nice guy and eve would be poorer without him.

While some of my alts had POCOs in low sec space, DNS kept putting them in RF over and over again, sometimes he would show to kill them and I would drive him off, other times he wouldn’t show, but the RF timers were getting annoying and I was wearing thin on my patience.

He offered to buy them form me at cost. I accepted if I could get a good tax rate. To avoid a scam, I wanted to use a 3rd party to transfer the 10 POCOs. He said it wasn’t worth it. So I said we would do each POCO and then payment so the amount anyone could get scammed would be one POCO and that would be minimal.

DNSBlack said I have to transfer all of them at the same time and then he will pay me. It seemed like a scam to me. He said it was a trust thing and he wanted me to trust him. I figured what the hell why not. So I transferred them and he paid me the full amount.

I will say it seeing as how everyone keeps avoiding the inequity of the situation: CCP gave valuable in game items to people who get paid in game to do a job. In other words (CCP rewarded paid people to provide in game content). Where as people like myself and vast majority of the eve community “pay” to provide content in game. See the difference? The rewarded Group gets PAID for content. the un-rewarded people PAY for content. Now don’t think this is anything other then what it is, I am simply saying why would you reward people who are already getting paid to provide content and not reward those who pay to provide content.

The single reason for rewarding Somer emploayees, by allmighty CCP, is if actually Sumer is CCP, and does a well done job of scooping isk outta game. Why reward small Sumer guys? Because noone would ever play a lottery in this game if they find out that CCP uses such methods, and some of them might know a bit too much for real Sumer owners health. Also, doing it might get them in a bit of conflict with the law, even in Iceland, because of black RL “isk”. As i said it also before, it’s not a single moment about Sumer or the ideea of Sumer Lottery. It’s just about the ideea of who’s behind it. May it be official or not.
Actually CCP being Summer would explain the whole picture, and the reaction of pro-Sumer involved, inclusive some …strange Sumer defenders like CSM members, and so on.

I don’t try to convince noone. People want and need a palpable in-game person to direct their anger to. This pretty hides all most probable variants anyway.

Funny part is that ccp retards (aka. known as their senior stuff) are still, even after 10y. confined in limited space of open ideas.

They don’t realize, and tragedy is – they don’t wanna realize, that EVE had evolved. They re prisoners of their own limited space of ideas, and there is no space for anything else.

Just being pedantic but please learn to distinguish between “loose” and “lose”.

    Simply put

    Loose = opposite of “tight”
Lose = opposite of “win”, to experience “loss”

Just like failed uses of “they’re” it means your sentence doesn’t make sense.
