DUST 514 was always thought to be a game for Playstation 3 only. Rumors sad that this was contract based because of the heavy investment both parties did to get the EVE-DUST link working. This week CCP CEO Hilmar Petursson sad: ”no signed piece of paper apparently stopping developer CCP putting the game on another platform, even a rival one”

Right now CCP is very happy with their player base on the Playstation 3 and they are not looking to expand this to futured Playstation 4’s (or XBOX One’s). This is mainly because creating another versions take a lot of effort.

“It’s easy to go and look at all the new shiny things that are coming but we don’t want to be doing that. We want to stick to our guns … there are 80 million PlayStation 3s and we have a free-to-play game; I think there is a massive opportunity in continuing to work on that throughout next year.”

We just haven’t decided,” Pétursson told me. “It’s just as simple as that. It can, technically, be – there’s nothing preventing it, it’s just not what we’re focusing on.

CCP is using their tactic of sticking to your guns. Wait and keep your product updated and then the game will progress from there. which is a very save card to play for CCP because you get more time to research your product.

“It’s those kind of things that we care more about rather than the exact number of people who are playing it, because we know that if we have that passion and we do the updates then the journey is going to take us to whatever numbers will come, just like it did with Eve.

“There were only 30,000 people playing Eve in the beginning, now there’s over half-a-million people playing it a decade later. We know how that works. If we stick to our guns, deliver on rapid-fire updates, the game accelerates and progresses so nicely that…

DUST and EVE are both community based games and CCP finds this most important. Hilmar sad the following about why they find the community of both games so important:

There’s a husband and wife team who pursued different gaming avenues before Dust. He would play Eve and she would play console games. Dust bridged the divide. “She started to play Dust, loved it, built her own alliance in Dust,” said Pétursson. “Now she has boots on the ground and he has an army in the sky. She’s calling the shots and he’s delivering them.

“It’s those kind of things that we care more about rather than the exact number of people who are playing it, because we know that if we have that passion and we do the updates then the journey is going to take us to whatever numbers will come, just like it did with Eve.

CCP is very happy with their 4000 max concurrent users in a F2P game. Pulling all those resources away from Eve for years to work on Dust was a great idea, the investment is really paying off!

At least they’re sensible enough not to bother putting effort into porting Dust to other platforms since the game is shit anyway.

They did not pull resources away from eve, these are just extra resources. Even if dust would stop, these guyz would not all of a sudden start all working on eve

Thank god… DUST’s major problem is that it’s lurched from entertaining to broken and back again with each update. That’s not fun for a game that has a much harder time getting the social and long term aspects that Eve basically lives on.

so they use “extra resources” to build a terrible game from the ground up rather than fix broken things in the game that got them this contract in the first place… how exactly is that supposed to make anyone feel better?

things called profits and investments… putting all ur profits into making a game that may die? or fall apart… all ccps eggs in one basket with eve… they tried to push some of that extra profit to a branch and its still eve universe. cut them some slack for trying to run a fucking business and not a fucking college kids senior project making games that make all the players happy.

If eve dies then dust dies as there is no eve tie and it is then a pointlessly repetitive, limited map shooter with bad mechanics that can not compare to other games in the genre, all the eggs are still in the EVE basket.

That is naive. Of course the investment in Dust cannibalised potential investment in Eve. CCP was a one product company, whatever capital applied to Dust could have been applied to Eve. Worst is they are so far in now, no matter how obvious to us it’s a dead duck that needs to be canned they still keep pumping resources into it and it continues to divert management focus.

I wouldn’t be surprised if CCP is exploring porting over Dust to PS4 behind the scenes, but is waiting to see whether the PS4 will even sell in decent numbers before investing substantial resources into such a project. So far, the reception to the next generation of consoles has been rather lukewarm, and there would not be much point in developing for a console that doesn’t sell.

The pre-orders for both PS4 and Xbox One have sold out, and the PS4 is expected to outsell the Xbox One by a small amount. It’s probably safe to develop for, especially since it would take minimal work to port it to the PC/XBOne if PS4 fails (underlying hardware is almost the same).

    best troll ever !

a PS4-Dust starter bundle release with keyboard & mouse is the last remaining chance to grab some attention for this unknown piece of crap.

considering the already invested time and money CCP has to do this.

A lot of gamers will buy a keyboard for the PS4 anyway.

why not at release in combination with an unknown f2p FPS.

It would be a good vita game or with a lot of work even a great ps4 game. But as it stands, it’s barely tied into EVE, light on features and lackluster in the visual department.

Doubling down can pay off big time, but I have yet to see them “delivering” on “rapid fire” updates.

Was it good idea to launch dust to ps3 ??? lol

You can’t use that same methodology in the console market ffs, your competing against studios with the likes of “Rockstar” “Bethesda”, DICE, and UBIsoft just to name a few. When you know your smelling a turd it’s time to flush the toilet.

To be fair, the new GTA made by Rockstar is a piece of crap, that looks like horseshit and runs at less then 22fps. Awful games for some reason still sell on consoles.

      1. lulz

lol… I know right? 22FPS is the avg. also, it dips into the mid teens at times lol…

I went to the GTA forums the day after the release and mentioned the bad FPS, and most ether don’t realize, or are such big fanboies that they don’t care how bad the FPS is.

        1. Stating the obvious

Then you see my point…. Awful games for some reason still sell on consoles. All you have to do is play the game to notice the bad frame rate, and that is the whole point I was making, it made tons of money, and a game that avg. 22 fps(which just in case you didn’t know, is god awful) is for some reason acceptable on consoles. Not really sure why, but a good IP will sell you millions of copys, and GTA5 proves this, hell GTA4 proved it, as it was even worse then 5, yet sold tens of millions . Not saying all console games are awful, “Last of Us” is an example of a great console game, but it had to be good to sell as it’s an original IP.

          October 7, 2013 at 9:34 pm Reply
      3. Marcus

It’s not just bad FPS on GTA5, the game has a lot of bad texture pop ins, and this was a big problem with GTA4, and Red dead. Max Payne3 another rockstar game was even worse then GTA5 when it came to frame rate, often dropping to 10FPS on both the PS3, and XBOX. Calling Rockstar games a good developer is the definition of a oxymoron. Vice City, and San Andreas were both great games, and the original Max Payne was amazing. But those games are almost ten years old, Vice City being eve older. Besides those three games Rockstar hasn’t made anything really good….. and don’t say anything retarded like RAGE, LA noir, and Manhunt were good games.
