In gaming, Balance, Consistency and Accountability is key. Its almost a certainty knowing CCP’s history, that the craft that mercs will use to move from point to point in Eden [the War Barge] will physically exist inside the New Eden galaxy. The implications there are staggering. Dust Mercenaries won’t simply exist in some pocket universe until they arrive in a location and queue for battle. For all intents and purposes it appears that they will have a fixed location and position within the galaxy. Does this mean they’ll also have a travel time in regards to getting from Point A to Point B as well? We realize ships in EVE move at faster than light speeds but in the interest of consistency there may also be the opportunity to intercept the War Barge on the way to its destination or perhaps even mount an attack on it.

If you’re a Dust Mercenary with little to no ties to EVE this probably causes some eyebrow raising. I can be attacked while on my War Barge? Not necessarily, and who really knows at this point? but if the Mercenary Mobile HQ must actually be an actual location there may be opportunities for some shenanigans and griefing by PC players. This will cause concern in many of the rather gregarious FPS veterans who have all but assured they will dominate the landscape in New Eden. We’ve covered many of them in the past and their countless promises of “Burning New Eden” may be reduced to nothing but tough talk if the very ships they reside in can be reduced to rubble before they reach their destination.

A couple questions we’d like to pose. We like the open-galaxy style of Dust 514 but balance is key before all else. So is making the War Barge a potential target a good thing? We would be fine with it as long as the caveat includes boarding EVE ships [insert evil laugh] Here are some things to ponder:

1.Will the War Barge have weapons?
2. Could it be a class of ship in New Eden?
3. Is it pilotable? Or do we rely on AI to get our mercs from place to place?
4. During our downtime will it reside in stations or orbit planets in our sovereign territory?
5. Can it be destroyed?
6. Could it be boarded and looted for assets?
7. How much will it cost?

These are just a few of the things to consider regarding the mode of transport most mercenaries will use in new Eden.     i think its actually a good idea if they added it to eve and ppl could fly it and accept like taxi contracts "take these toons from system Z to system A and get X isk" and if u could fit guns for the dust players to use in case of a attack.

    War Barge's will just be filled with empty clones, as far as eve players a concerned, they will want to shoot them for kill board effeminacy, and to help they're faction, I won't be flying those flying coffins, that's for sure. A duster won't even be aware they exists, it's not like dusters will actually sit in this thing waiting to be dropped off at a plant, they will simply jump clone (appear) at the planet, but the eve players are the ones that will have to move it there.

    It would be interesting if you had to have a ready supply of clones wherever you wanted to go, though. That would allow EVE players to restrict clone movements, to smuggle in armies of clones, etc.

    I would imagine that for the purposes of gameplay, warbarges will only be necessary for null-sec operations. I would also guess that these ships don't carry the soldiers themselves, just their CRU stations and MCV's that are dropped onto the battlefield from orbit. The DUST mercenary tech is miniaturized capsuleer tech. What requires a capsule for us they only need a custom clone and implant for. Which means that while we need a station (or previously, a mothership) to revive/clone jump into, they can do in the CRUs and MCV's in the warbarge.

    Should they be attackable in transit? absolutely. Should they be attackable while in orbit around a planet currently under siege? In null-sec yes, in low-sec maybe not. Why? Low-sec is mostly where the instant queue casual players are going to be fighting (as well as everyone else, until CCP pushes DUST 514 into null, which it won't be at release, iirc). Killing the warbarges in orbit would have a chilling effect on the game's fun factor, when one side's war barge gets smoked and they potentially lose the battle due to something completely beyond their control, and that's never fun.

    to move from one planet to another it should have to fly in the traditional eve way and should carry everything that the dust pilots will be using in their battles so if we kill it then the mercs suffer the same way we do if our ship dies while carrying our stuff. that would force them to have friends or alts in eve to protect them

    There should be a particular part of space in the north where the planets have much richer resources so that the mercs want to migrate to these planets and we can shoot them.

      The rich planets have already been designated to be in goon territory to encourage more people to leave high sec and whs and join the fight for space. Ccp is also working on bringing a tax system into eve to tax plp a lot more the less involved in null pvp they are.

    Maybe…. Covert War Barges Jump capable like Black Ops with no weaponry and no Cargo just Dust Holds with Dropship holds. allowing them to jump through locations in low and avoid gate camps. also allowing them to literally deploy drop ships when arrived at a planet….

    An idea for war barges that EVE pilots can kill: Have war barges ferry in new reinforcement clones for their side beyond the initial 40 (increasing the units needed to be killed to achieve victory conditions) or additional vehicles beyond a certain mass. This way initial quick match play is largely unaffected; you can still spawn and have tanks etc. However, a dedicated and committed group with cross-game integration will gain a significant advantage by being able to ferry additional clones and additional vehicles. Denying or gaining these advantages is not a guarantee of victory, but it certainly helps.

    As far as I can see the main use of these barges would be to instigate the ground battle by dropping the required 150 clones, I wouldnt agree with adding extra clones as some bigger alliances would cause havoc dropping 150 clones every 2 minutes. What i would like to see is the ability for the war barge to drop additional temp (just for that match)equipment for the mercs to use so that corps can throw there money around and have their troopers stomping the battlefield in the latest tech 2 HAVs with all the bells and whistles… provided the war barge can stay in orbit long enough to make the drop.
