Well, this was long overdue – after taking a week off we are back with a fresh look and a well deserved rest. I hope you like the new theme which is based on The Verge website look, I have to mention this is not the “final” look for EN24, I’ll keep tweaking it as I see it fit and eventually the site will end up looking differently “unique” while maintaining the same functionality. Please understand any technical glitches which might appear in the coming days.

This said, pending is to push the recent comment into the front page and work out the advertising thing (might end up dropping some banners). Anyhow, I hope you like the new look and the increased stream of Eve Online news.

I would also appreciate any feedback to make this new look work. I am also working on a mobile theme, finally!.

Glad to see you're still alive and kicking

I starting thinking "Wow if Riv is dead… where am I gonna get my news"

I still think you should start a EVE corp of newscasters/reporters to report on news so that the news will keep rolling on, and allow you to sit back and approve/change/trash any news your "guys on the scene" get

Creating news and game content at the same time= Win for everyone 😀

PS: Still prefer the old site look though

    1. Yeah, that's fine, although there are a few advantages of this new theme.

      – I can show 25 stories in the front page instead of 15, which means the lifespan of a thread is extended.
      – Scrapping the old theme allows me to integrate a much needed mobile theme.
      – this one should load faster.

I have also toyed with the idea of switching from Intense Debate to either LiveFyre or Disqus, but that's for future consideration.

-15 stories on 1 page was enough, if people want to read more they just click the "older post" link in case they missed anything.
-Also I don't know about anyone else but I only go on eve24 when I'm at home on my desk top, or at work at a desktop, its meant for a relaxing read when nothings going on.
-And loading wasn't a issue, at least not for me

And yeah keep intense since most people that bothered to set up accounts did it just for this site anyways

Overall if I woke up tomorrow and say the old site layout returned, I wouldn't complain at all

Please remove the tiles crap on top or at least switch it to the bottom of the page. Chronological order is where it’s at.

The new site is somewhat harder to read, but I can’t place my finger on why…. but I get a nice “vibe” from it as well. Keep it and tweak it, lets see where we end up.

      Really, remove the tiles.

The look is great and refreshing. I like the color scheme and the sharp presentation for the whole thing!

Just a couple of things that I hope you'll consider constructive feedback:
    – The top mashup in squares looks nice (kinda like Windows 8) but is hard to read. You can even get rid of it.
    – The three columns make it confusing because: a) we don't know which comes before which intuitively – it's not a good thing if I have to look at each timestamp.. and b) there is no ordering of importance – they are all the same size. Maybe you can number them somewhere (in circle at bottom right?) as 1 to 25 with 1 being the latest story, and it going chronologically?

If you want to fit more stories, I'd say that you highlight the top 10, and then you can have inlined stories for the next 40 or something – no boxes, just a line for each with a timestamp.

    All in all, nice work.

I like the idea behind the theme. Some opinionated suggestions though:

    – Fix the font on the "Popular Stories" or whatever you'd like to call the ones up top in the colored panels. It's a bit hard to read and is looks stretched out. As are some of the background images.
    – The comment counters would probably look less awkward down in the right corner of each panel.
    – Make it so featured articles don't show up when you get to the normal articles. You'll get more articles on the page and it's a bit more convenient for the readers.
    – The colored panels themselves contrast very badly with the rest of the Black/White theme going on. I'd honestly like the whole page better without the colored panels for high lights. Or just make them less vibrant.
    – A convenient dev blog tracker would make this more of a one stop news site as well.

While I like that you are trying to update I feel that a few things could be refined a bit

    – Ditch the "top stories" it's just messy
    – Organize the columns, Perhaps "Dev blogs" "Top Stories" "Blogs" With some kind of header to tell someone what they are looking at
    – I don't understand the drop down over Live feeds on the main page? seems like a better place for that would be on the live feeds page and would make it easier to click the links under it.
    – I Personally Enjoyed your "battle summery" at the bottom of a battle report I encourage you not to give up on that

    October 29, 2012 at 5:52 am Reply
    1. The thing with the top stories is that I will pour in a stream of "lesser" relevant news and blog posts which will add up to the site without losing our focus from the core-content (which will stay up in the top stories)

Since I'll be featuring discussion / popular threads more often, having these top stories will prove useful in keeping that content in the front page while being able to put out more content without having it pushing the top stories down, which happened to be a serious short coming of the blog-roll styled setup the old theme had.

You could just as easily dedicate a Column to that Three columns like you have now, one be all your "top news" one can be "blogs" then the third lesser stories and what have you. but then again perhaps i miss the simple organization of it all.

Gladly EN24 isn't dead. Now you really should try to improve the quality of the journalism, Riv. The problem currently is that with only two major news sites, one being better written but in essence a CFC propaganda machine, the other an anti-CFC outlet with lesser quality, people tend to attribute greater verisimilitude to the former. That's going in favor of Mittens "controlling the narrative". The only way to counteract this imbalance is to make better, more credible and less biased journalism.

You seem to be the only one thinking you are not anti-CFC (and tbh, who could blame you for it…), but that's not how you counterbalance TM. And btw, the people running TM are also not professional journalists AFAIK… They are pro at deleting critical comments, however.

        1. Nem

^this. Right now this and TM are the only two eve news sites with any real following. You can't report every victory of your own coalition while relegating your defeats to footnotes or 'open threads' (such as BL leaving dotbros, tribute falling) and shutting out battle reports from your opponents' perspective and expect to be taken seriously when you call yourself objective.

At least TM still reports CFC's defeats the same way it does it's victories, though they are just as guilty as this site for posting "critiques" of their opponents' statements while publishing their own without comment.

CFC defeats/NCdot victories are actually interesting, killing huge goon fleets outnumbered 3:1 is interesting. Killing shitloads of Goon SC is interesting. Solar welping constantly to NCdot is interesting. Goons shooting an Ihub is not interesting, one post about taking tribute is enough. People want interesting news, Goons are not interesting except in defeat.

Down votes? You wankers want srs crit? kay.

The resolution of the font is horrible and it looks like something from 1991 when you get to around 20 point or larger font size. This also extends to some of the previous layout's images that have been recycled.

For a personal page making the background White is about as safe, nonthreatening, and boring design choice you could do, and is why corporate news sites do it. It doesn't offend anyone and doesn't block anything.

Half the article pictures in Alliance sub groups(?) are broken.

Second this point definitely. Was the first thing, and only thing for that matter, that has bugged me, but noticed within a minute of visiting the site that there were no dates in the corner (more important than responses in my opinion).

As a daily reader I have read most writings from the previous day but don't always remember the title. Without the date you have too, as I just did, open the article/report or scroll down below the new feature to check the regular ordered listing. This ultimately could cause the new display feature to be irrelevant for my use if I find myself just scrolling down. For the random visitor or person linked to the site this wouldn't be as much of an issue.

On TM pretty much all comments that are slightly more critical than neutral are deleted. Exceptions are comments that are stupid enough to allow a home run for the following counter argument.

As far as articles, the only viewpoints posted from parties opposed to CFC are battlereports or the reposting of alliance updates. 100% of the opinion pieces / editorials are dripping with pro-CFC rhetoric.

What makes TM more insidious is how the presentation, writing, articles outside of the eve scope, etc. suggests it to be a respectable news site.

Like the new site Riv it looks good, and is much faster. However I think you need more/better writers and you need to stop personally editing topics that writers submit. If you want to have a strong news site, you need to open access to all news not just stuff you deem relevant based on your positions.

All in all a step forward, hopefully you loosen the leash a bit on what writers can contribute going forward though.
