Being subject myself to convo-bombing often I get in fleet fights, I found amusing the outcry generated during the battle for WV-0R2 in which a Titan was aborted by the DOT Brothers. During the fight, the Razor carrier pilots complained they were subject to convo-bombing.

Yesterday one of the warning emails sent by the GMs was leaked into the wild.

Leaked GM eve-mail throw light on alleged Convo Spam Claims.

Official Warning From: GM Bunyip
Sent: 2012.10.10 21:16
To: Redacted

Greetings, GM Bunyip here.
This is an official warning that a large number of your alliance members have been caught exploiting the chat invite system to gain an unfair advantage in PvP.
They have been confirmed as exploiting by sending multiple chat requests to characters in an effort to give themselves an advantage. This incident occurred on 2012.10.02, from 10:40:00 onwards, in the WV-0R2 system.

Note that exploiting in such a way is against the EULA and Terms of Service, and could ultimately result in action being taken against their accounts. Additionally, dealing with these incidents takes us a great deal of time – time that could have been better spent helping players with genuine problems.
We have treated this incident with great lenience. All that has happened at this stage is every individual involved has been warned and had their account marked for future reference.

Future violations may not be treated with the same lenience. Please inform your alliance to cease this activity at once or risk action being taken against their accounts.
If you wish to dispute this, do not reply to the EVE mail. Instead, file a petition.
Best regards, GM Bunyip

How Convo Bombing works?

A while back ago CCP Games integrated a functionality on the “audio and chat menu” to allow players to open conversations to other player via double click, all its left to do is to spam the left mouse button on the desired character.

What can be done to counter it?

Luckily the EVE Client has several options which allow you to block all incoming conversation, all non-address book conversations, block corps, alliances and conversations from specific individuals. So the tools are there, but they are often overlooked, forgotten or simply unbeknownst to some players.

Metagaming the Metagaming

The big issue has been this is one of those :EVE: “features” which has been lying around for ages and CCP Games haven’t bothered to fix. Some players even ignore the provided countering options in hopes of petitioning their lost ships afterwards and making a case to the GM of being “affected” by the convo spam.

In other cases like mine specifically, blocking all incoming convos is a luxury some players cannot have – given that it would deny them business oportunities or in my case getting a nice scoop.

In the end CCP Games needs to publicly admit the mechanics – like many other often overlooked mechanics – was poorly implemented. A default “five new convos per minute” limited could be implemented as many other solutions. Oh! and CCP while you look at it, please find a way to block all incoming local chats, I know Jita traders and null-sec fighters would deeply appreciate it.

Good Riddance if they keep it up.

Win (or lose) the fight on the merits of your ship, your skills, your FC and your friends. Leave the rest at the door.

They did it to our fc's all the time so our Fc that night said fuck it convospam this carrier. Funny to see Goons cry to ccp about us doing that to them when they do it all the time to us. Next time I send in a petition about being convo-spammed I expect something to happen if they are going to do that for Goons. I still believe those carriers would have died anyway since they were probably running out of cap seeing as they had no cap xfers on those carriers and perma running 4 capital reps will drain you very quickly.

Funnily enough, the pilots who got convo bombed are from RZR therefore are not Goons, but hey, reading shit takes effort right…

On the note of Goons doing this, I beleive this "has" happened but each person requested a conversation with the target once (so "not spam") whereas the NCDOT bros sent mutiple requests each, hence the warning. I dont agree that one is different to the other or that Goons shouldnt have been reprimanded, but at least ensure you have all information to hand before making wild accusations regarding CCP having one rule for you and one for Goons because there is a difference in the circumstances, no matter how small…

No one gives a fuck who they are, they are all under one coalition.

It's DOT Bros vs CFC ( AKA GOONS ) You are classified as goons because you are all the same skill level. Enjoy posting angry comments about my truthful statement.

Hey I was there btw and if you want instead of calling you goons I can call you goon pets, whichever you prefer and Goons definitely do not send just one message. There are no differences in the circumstances and I find it hilarious the tears coming from you guys over us doing what you do to us all the time.

Feel free to keep telling yourself RZR is the same as Goons, but it may help your comprehension of events if you allow the possibility of that not being the case, and that not all in the CFC follow the same playbook. Shocking, I know.

During my time with Black Legion I know of at least one time that Goons, outnumbering us by several hundred and raging from the fact that Elo Knight was jabbing a metaphoric knife into their sides, got convo bombed.

I was present for a good portion of the US time zone fights between dotbros and goons. I never once heard an Ncdot or Black Legion FC call for convo-bombing Goons or Goon allies.

The hard turn to port this website has made in it's reporting amuses me muchly.

Why dont they create a list of people convoing you, instead of opening a new window? They could stick a new icon on the neocom for it and everything "Some random asshat that wants to talk to you #247395"

    1. abc123

That is a very, very good ideal. Why dont you put it in the forums. I think that would really be a easy fix and great tool to deal with convos. Then when you are ready you can open the Neocom Icon and take the convos you want and let the rest be. They will be cleared off the list when you log and put in a log in your EVE game logs for later review. It also gives one documentations of your Chat request spammed by meta game fagtards like the likes of PL and other LOSERS.

I do like the double-standard here again. NCdot does on a specific incident and gets warned. Meanwhile, Dotbros firewall and logi pilots have standing orders to auto-block all convos because goons have been doing this for months without action by CCP.

Also, a few months too late. Hell, this stuff was used going back to the IT wars.

Trick is having CFC treat Indy guys like Dirt even though they are cearbears and act hard, then we approach indy guys promise if we win we will have a place for them if we lose we wont say shit….Spy made….10 secs flat……They hate GSF but dont want there huge investments ruined by blobs, if on other hand they mad the Blob equal to a certain numer of skilled guys, like a SPxKill decided by loSPxloSkill and made some number that was even like 50 25 mil sp and below drake pilots is equal to 250 50 mil Hac pilots and onlything that mattered was pilots FC`s etc, then All the Bears would come work for NCDOT as they would be treated like kings, warrior cultures revered blacksmiths…..But schmuck spearmen who were slaves didnt care who made there weapons…..

  7. I just do not know

Well I was in the fleet and when a certain person said convo bomb them I did not do it, first of all we were going to kill them anyway, there was no way those carriers were going to survive once their cap was used up, the Goon drake fleet was well and truly countered by the firewall and the carriers were webbed to immobolisation. So for Razor to make out that they would not have died is absolute rubbish!!

People that engage in these types of activities deserve to have the FULL weight of the law in what ever country they are in come down on them!

It might not be against the EULA but in many countries there are actual laws that cover it's use & abuse. I think some countries even see that sort of thing as cyber-terrorism of some sort & the punishment for being caught taking part in it can be very harsh.

yes but if the person DDOS you isnt in the same local region/area/land/nation as you the odds of the request from your ISP to the ISP of the person who launches the attack actually leading to legal action is very very very small unless your system being attacked is a important corporation or the Forensics of the attack are easy to follow or the ISPS netgods are best buddies.

in short…it probably wont happen maybe someone gets a warning from its isp at most..its the recevieing net that takes the hit aka your local isp…its their routers and net that takes the dump.

As the concept of convo spamming was developed and used by CFC as an exploit, I presume these types of mails have been sent to Fattani etc. previously?
I flew logistics in this fight and the spam was to 1 carrier once. Everyone was busier than a flea in a dog show for the rest of the time, so it was a brief, 1 off, occourence.
I'm prepared to donate a box of kleenex tissue's to the poor deprived pet pilots who lost their ships…
The fight occoured in 2 stages – a tactical encounter with a maelstrom subcap fleet, then a fast burn to the carriers. The fact we had to travel several jumps after whelping the sub cap fleet, yet still found the carriers exposed and vulnerable, would suggest to me that some fairly high order errors were commited by razor FC's… just in my (humble) opinion!!
Here's the whole engagement, carriers after 3 min, 30 sec – make up your own minds…..

    enjoy!! (we did… %) )

A couple of minutes were still left on the timer, so I imagine they were going to gamble holding reps until relief came and try to rep the csaa pos if the opportunity so arose. Not engaging NC. would have guaranteed the death of the tower. They lost that wager.

Feel free to suggest what you would have done differently :)

Wrong. When convo spammed on an industrial scale, the client still tanks. It may not display those convo containers, but is still processing all those incoming packets. Ask any recipient of large scale convo spams, whether it was those RZR pilots, or the host of NC./Soco FCs before them.

Having been there done that ect, WV- engagement has been put under the microscope, FC flamed and tears dried, even so the following points were raised at the inquest.

Pilots that lost carriers had them insured, got paid out and while not happy did not loose.

Decision was made to explore the problem in depth with CCP on the grounds that this was a breach of terms of service, not the EULA.

CCP's intial stance was fuck off, pressure applied and it got kicked upstairs under a DDoS heading.

CCP obliged to act on those grounds as not only being and illegal action under UK laws but also a breah of Clause 16 of the terms of service so making it also a breach of the EULA.

Hence the slapped arse email from CCP.

Who did it when they did it and why is irrelevant CCP cannot afford to ignore it and so acted, no one is expecting them to reimburse any ships lost or reset any clock.

Expecting this one to run for a while yet though/
