The Last Hulkageddon

Hulkageddon is a time-honored event in EvE.  Since 2009 Hulk Ganking has been a part of EvE’s culture, with 2 events in 2010, another in 2011 and this one, possibly the last in 2012.  CCP (Greyscale) is all about making life easy for carebears.  CCP (Greyscale) has battered gankers with constant nerfs over the last few years.  CONCORD gets faster, and more effective.  Players with GCC lose control of their warp drives and can’t board fresh ships limiting them to one attempted gank every 15 minutes.  This means that gankers have to constantly develop new tactics and improve their methodology, while the carebears pretty much enjoy a safer and safer experience.

Of course it hasn’t all gone the way of the ganked.  This year we have two new tools that should ensure some hilarity.  Tier 3 BCs and the upgraded dessies.  An untanked hulk can be ganked by a single Tornado, or 2-3 catalysts VERY easily.  Swarms of arty thrashers will likely make another appearance as well.  In 0.6 and below you should easily get too shots off (maybe in 0.7) and 5 thrashers will tear an untanked hulk to shreds.  An untanked mackinaw will go down even faster.  Heck even a tanked mackinaw in 0.5 is vulnerable.

Now seeing as gankers tend to be more community oriented when it comes to events like this, and we share information whereas most carebears will be ignorant of Hulkageddon even several days into the event, despite enormous amounts of advertising; even though CCP (Greyscale) continues to stack the deck against us we work to improve, and this Hulkageddon will likely be the most successful one yet.  Even with fewer ganks / pilot / hour, even with faster response times, even with all this crap, we will succeed.  That will drive the carebears mad.  Some will respond like I did when my carebearing was interrupted.  Learn to pew.  Some will ragequit.  MANY will forumwhine; and when those forum whines hit CCP Greyscale’s screen…

He does what it tells him to.

He will do something that will surprise everyone even though it should surprise no one.  He will come out with a devblog, or a forum post saying something along the lines of “Since SoniClover came up with the perfect solution to all your highsec PvP needs with wardecs we are going to remove the ability to shoot neutral ships in highsec.  I know you are all real excited about this new era of EvE.  Throw out some wardecs and try out the new system!  You’ll love it!  What are you doing with the torches and pitchforks?  Put me down nonoNoNoNONONONONOOOOOOOOOoooooooooo…….”

CCP has already moved a LONG way to protect it’s carebears.  There’s no reason to believe they wont continue this path.  In 2009 ganks were simple.  Even an utter PvP nub like me could gank a hulk solo in 0.6 space.  Let me suggest some things that hulk pilots could do to protect themselves during this event.

Team up.  Tank your ships, have a friend along in a scimitar providing remote reps.  A gank squad will involve 5-8 toons if they are using dessies.  I’ll make your hulks practically invincible with 5.

3 hulks, fit for tank.  Resists, extenders, all the basic stuff.  Look up the fits.  1 Orca providing leadership bonuses.  MOAR RESISTS!  A scimitar orbiting at 50km with 4 large reppers, ECCM a little bit of tank and reps permarunning on the other 4 ships.

But no.  That’s too hard.  It’s too much to expect people to make the attempt to defend themselves.  They should be able to expect complete safety sitting at 0 in an untanked, expensive, oft-targeted ship during the most heavily advertised event of the EvE year.  Let’s just make CONCORD insta-spawn everywhere, or better yet turn off the gankers’ guns.

So go out and enjoy Hulkageddon.  Really dig into it.  FRAPS it, gank as much as you can as often as you can as long as you can.  Because this is likely to be the last.  We can adapt as much as we want, but we can only do so much when the other side’s “adaptation” consists of whining to receptive Devs.

    2. Blame me? As soon as I read your post 30 minutes ago, I immediately sent off an evemail to Riverini and Bagehi stating my strong sentiment that these thoughts of yours need wider circulation. This is an excellent piece of writing and mirrors my own thoughts concerning Greyscale and the dumbing-down of highsec.

Greyscale is a harsh super-carebear and he should be off designing stuff for Maple Story or its ilk.

The reason you are at -73 is not because people love EVEuni so much. It's because you can't seem to let go of the past. Your grudge against the uni is something few people can relate to, and though it's not a problem to have grudges, your constant posting about them makes people tired of you.

You seem like an intelligent fella. I can only suggest you use your qualities on other matters and leave the past the past.

          2. But CCP loves them to death, and I believe a lot of the carebearish changes to highsec are because of them (either directly or indirectly.)

Their leadership are bad players and bad for the game (except for Darian Reymont.)

Every day countless of new people try out EVE online. At some point they will become overwhelmed with information. Many of them will quit, because they can't cope with this. It takes a special kind of gamer to bite through this sour bit, the kind of gamer EVE is so renowned for.

With the help of EVE-uni, though, even the less hardcore players manage to get a grip on the massive world of EVE, be it at a slower pace. This does two things:

            1) It creates more revenue for CCP
            2) It gives me more people to play with or to shoot at

So ofcourse they have a special place in CCP's heart. Is that a bad thing though? I don't think so. They're not a regular corp just like any other in EVE.

I think you are focussing to much on the negative side of EVE-uni that you forget to see the big picture. EVE-uni is good for the game.

I don't know why you have such a problem with them (I hear it's because you got kicked), but unless you drop this tantrum people will look at you as "that whiny b*tch with a grudge".

I say this all with the least intend to insult.

Honestly, it is roughly the same place CCP has for Test and Goons as well, both of which also pull in a large number of new players. Different types of players are drawn into different new player experiences.

But.. that kill you posted, doesn't it hurt your argument more than anything? You say in the golden days, it was easy even for a nub to it, to kill a 150m ship with a 30m ship anytime he wanted to? Given hulk pilots can not ALLWAS have their scimi firends with them.
Do not get me wrong, i would never mine and am far more on the ganking side myself, but imho it should be at least a somehow even playground. I want ganking a miner to involve as much risk isk wise as the miner puts at stake involuntarily. And i want a savy miner to be able to do his thing properly and still be able to survive the attack of someone with way less player skill as himself.
But even while you whine about how unfair eve has become towards you, you still put up examples over examples how it even today is easily possible to gank any miner without loosing too much isk. Afterall, your main complaint appears to be, that back in the days you could use a brutix while today you have to spend a few m more a Tier3?

You fail at ganking if you can not take out a hulk with one catalysts or thrasher. If you want to find out, take a hulk and hang out in the belts in lonetrek. You will find out how a true ganker flies. Your tears sound like the care bears we shoot all day long. Has it gotten harder maybe, but it is easy for a person knowing what they are doing.

i agree with u :) and i dont coz im a carebear , i fear the H-AG and i despise ganks of that sort coz the fatal flaw of the game is , that there is no way for miners to fight back .
In my opinion the only correct way to go is to have another approach from the devs ,lets have some fights instead . Want to protect ur ship? Want to protect ur ice field ?
Lets make fleets of barges … WOOT XD . , no but seriously . stop nerfing the sandbox , even if its a pain in the ass for me .

    1. That's like driving around an open-pit mine in a tank and blowing the shit out of dump trucks. Of course the dump trucks can't fight back … because they're fucking dump trucks. The open pit mine will need tanks of their own to protect against enemy tanks.

As a spaceship , and not a dump truck , and that to be honest , we invest a lot of money for that ship , plus fitting .
I think it follows a logic where we need simply more ways for us the defend what is called our own , we dont need to involve other corp members, tanks as u say. Defend it on ur own , like u want to kill on ur own for the KM and for the prize money .
Im not calling for a boost in tank , but make it more enjoyable as a game, for every one and not only for a few , sounds fair to me . And only then it is garantueed that ganks will survive and tears still will be there , and less complains and less nerf plans from the devs .

It's true. So.. why do I always hear grief from the griefers that they aren't able to freely shoot random ships in empire space?

Wouldn't a 'realistic' set up prevent you from making an alternate to allow you to get away with empire ganks with minimal consequence? Or for that matter wouldn't it be realistic that a pilot who has a history be barred entry into certain NPC corps (depending on the region of space where they commit the ganks)? Or… in the instance of the comming Jita Interdiction by CFC, wouldn't the Caldari Empire wardec the CFC?

Employing meta loop-holes does not allow room for an arguement that carebears don't want a realisitic sandbox.

Suicide ganking is barely even PvP. Your target is slow, harmless, and has the tank of a wet sheet of Kleenex. It can't fight back. It can't escape. There is no risk involved–you've already written that ship off as lost, so the worst thing that can happen is that you…. don't…. kill your target in time. All your target can do is pray that three bars of health don't turn red before CONCORD shows up.

Hey, what does that sound like? Yup. Suicide ganking is the "pirate" version of mishing.

These events that tip the balance in highsec where Hulks will die in the hundreds, perhaps even the thousands will make some people very rich. Smart people will have prepared stockpiles by now.

I do however find it hard to understand why there is so much complaining from both sides of the issue. You want to mine and not risk getting ganked by someone bending the rules, move to 0.0. You want to shoot hulks with impunity, move to 0.0. In short, if you don't like CCP's rules, move your lazy arse to 0.0.

With mineral prices like they are and where they will likely go in the near future, due to the drone and T1 loot changes, do you really think pilots in Hulks will be a rare thing in belts and gravs?

The fact is, CCP has made ganking so easy that even idiots can pull it off. It becomes alittle harder and the fail bunny kills cry about it. A proper ganker will spend a hour testing the system, then continue ganking because they found a way.

I hope they give the hulk 2 more mids, and enough CPU for a LSE II, just to read another whine post by someone clearly shit at the easiest thing in Eve, killing a miner.

    Orca – 745mil
    Mining foreman mindlink – 950mil
    Scimitar – 170mil
    3x Hulk – 855mil
assume that fit and mining implants won't go over 150mil, add one more character to do the hauling
Bottom line: 2.87bil isk, six accounts

What do I get for this? Well, at an ideal rate with all skills at 5 and perfect refining, in 0.5 it will be 30mil/hour per hour per Hulk. Realistic figure – 20-25 mil per hour per Hulk. That's 60-75mil/hour total, not counting time to haul and sell minerals.

Still looks like a decent income? Then you forgot that you're using six accounts (three hulks, one Orca, one logi, one hauler). That lowers income to measly 10-13mil per hour per account of not-so-afk-mining, risking 300mil Hulks and having spent nearly 3bil on this whole setup. With all goddamn skills at 5.

"But no. That’s too hard. It’s too much to expect people to make the attempt to defend themselves"

Bigger balls or working brain, what would you choose? Rational choice so far – screw that, I'm going to run more missions or sit on a stack of tier 3 battleships and wait for them to reach 350mil p/u.

Also, gankbear tears – best tears.

I have to see a RL engineer who doesn't realize and redesign the stuff he is about to unleash to the work for the harshness of the environment.

Ganking miners in hisec is pathetic and the whole story is pretty sad. Unless you are doing large scale interdictions this cannot be of any strategic importance and you are just looking for easy but useless kills. Why would you spend your time on that? So if you'd be on a RL battlefield you would go and shoot some neutral farmers? Very brave but the loot is largely useless… Stop the BS and go get some real/important fights in low or nullsec and if people want to be mindless miners (sorry for the tautology) that should not be your concern.

if thoes Battleship guns can't blast a hulk to smitherin i don't know what does.

and if losing a ship for 80M is to mutch (counting high) then perhaps killing a ship for 350M is not in your grasp.

sorry but i don't buy your crocodile tears.

Make the ganker's guns stop working? THEN USE 1400MM NADOS

And CCP will never make locking neutrals in high sec impossible, there would be too much blowback.

There will always be a work around to CCP's anti ganking meathods, so stop whining and figure them out!

Also, just going to throw in here that I support a new more heavily tanked mining barge for 0.0, due to the fact that "defend[ing] your mining ops!" isnt possible when the mining fit hulk will have about 10k EHP

I can only agree with you man. Hunting hulk in high sec is for me like hunting noobs lvl 1-10 with maxed level character in fantasy MMOs. I mean, those people are mostly just like "I got him, ahahaha, noob!" So what? He is noob as they were and someone shot them so they feel they have to make it as hard for anyone? 😀 I just love how some pvp pilots are bragging about high prices, well if they help that with shooting miners than enjoy. 😀 There always should be a safe place in any mmo.

I mean I like gankers, have two solo emp kills with my hulk while afk, so its fun. 😀 But they were just 1v1, they can also just meet up. It takes 3 people to easy gank hulk and one of them is covops. But its fun to play with them as they are warping 15km+- and trying to catch and target me I just wait a bit and than warp out. 😀

I love how gankers and griefers work through elaborate strategies that exploit game and aggro mechanics, but then QQ about changes in the game that don't allow them to play precisely the way they want to play.

I have no particular love for carebears, but I think people should be able to play the game the way they want. So CCP needs to institute checks and balances that keep the game semi fair for everyone. Griefers and gankers are such children that they can't wrap their heads around that simple concept.

The QQ Bears need to accept that danger should be inherent to the system, otherwise they should check out Freelancer or X2.
The QQ Gankers need to accept that your right to hunt cows is not as important as the structure of the economy.

Ganking miners for tears is simply retarded, if there were no carebears they would be no fucking ships to fly and no fucking EVE.

Carebears are an essential faucet for the EVE universe to work properly, drive them out of the game with events like this and you're only hurting yourself, I'd rather not have to build my own shit, just leave the fucking cearbears to their carebearing if that's what they enjoy doing, because I can't be fucked to do it myself.

It's not much of a circle. A circle implies symmetry. There hasn't been any upgrade to mining ships since when? Meanwhile people have access to cheap battlecruisers with battleship grade weapons. Yeah, there is waaay more death than life in this circle.

Nice tears Corelin. HTFU. If you want to gank in highsec it's going to cost more… and it should. They wont take it away completely … just balance the field a bit.

I'd even be in favor of a bubble you could drop that would prevent targets inside it from being locked. You'd have to kill it before you could kill anything else. If for nothing else, than to hear you guys complain about how you're too terrible to kill anything in highsec anymore.
