Wilhelm Arcturus, he’s played internet spaceship related games since the early days of MegaWars III, and expects to get the hang of things any day now. He reports on EVE from an individual capsuleer’s point of view at TAGN.

TAGN: Six Fleets in Venal

As previously mentioned, after the war in Tenal came to a quick end, the focus of the CFC seemed set to turn on the truce breaking Northern Coalition and their tech moons in the Venal region.

This was confirmed last night (my time) at the State of the Goonion, where The Mittani outlined the plan for the CFC to go for a maximum effort this weekend in Venal to try to start and end this moon war in the north.

Alliances in the North

The call to arms seems to have worked. I got on an hour late and found all the fleets not only out, but pretty much full. I slept in a bit and now I have to wait for a reinforcement fleet.

But from the sound of things on fleet coms, where I spent a brief time this morning, things are going well for the CFC. The Mittani linked to a screen shot of a fleet of 175 dreadnaughts destroying a tower.

Dreadnaughts Attack

It is a wide-screen picture, so you have to click on it to be able to see capital ships clearly. You can also see the soon-to-be-destroyed moon harvesting array in the blast.

A moon harvesting array

So, it may be true that Vince Draken, leader of Northern Coalition, has decided not to contest the moons in Venal given the large forces that the CFC was able to muster.

Or they may be laying low. Since the moons in Venal lay between the two parties, there is the potential for this to turn into a long guerrilla war with each side preying on the moons of the other. And there is still another day to go in the offensive. There is still plenty of time for things to get hot.

Also mentioned in the State of the Goonion was the fact that the CFC is not going to invade Cobalt Edge where Intrepid Crossing lives, though it was promised that if they became involved in the moon war in Venal that the CFC would come in and destroy their capital ship assembly arrays (CSAAs), thus setting back severely any of their capital ship production.

There was also mention of some sort of agreement with Ev0ke, whom the Goons have been fighting with since the dawn of time. This involved them relinquishing some moons that they had previously taken. I was actually on an op last night that was focused on taking back a moon in Pure Blind.

They had less people then the people they were fighting and their supercaps logged in while the NC's didn't. Numbers during the war were over 50-60k NC members vs 20-25k DRF/PL/NC./Evoke. If you don't believe me go take a look at all the threads from about a year ago.

        2. Goonmoo

It's really simple: Goons are pussies, period.
As long as they don't outnumber you at least 3:1 they won't fight.

Which is really the annoying thing. I mean, there are 500 people in 4 mixed fleets in system all fired up to get killed and our spies tell us the 700 Goons next door are rather jerking off each other in local and go back blueballing.

What the hell man, don't waste the time of us AND your mindless drones – whatever happened to welping whole Maelstrom fleets? Really too expensive?

Blue balling is a strategy that is pulled on both sides. Raiden has done that several times earlier in the war for Tenal. They would reinforce towers. We'd both form up to save but they just sit on their titan for half an hour before standing down. The next day, they'd do the same thing. Wars are sometimes about stamina and getting people riled up towards an overarching goal. If you can't do that on more than one day, you're losing. I don't know how else to put it.

Its a valid tactic. Also it causes your opponent to think it won't be serious the time you actually are. Pisses off the line troopers who burn out.

          3. Spangleadesh

RDN blueballed when was pointless fighting though, lets be fair here. If CFC has 1k in system and know full well 100 dread waiting to jump in your not gonna engage back end of your prime (running into CFC prime) when your 5:1 outnumbers and if engage you get your titan fleet pinned down.

Goons on the other hand wont engage unless hvae at least 3:1 and even then blueball – the difference is RDN did it as risk was too high, CFC did it because wasnt a certain win even though was wasting 1k of thier own members time.

Hold on and when CFC are not beating on – have the customary cloaky faggots cyno, hot dropping Brix/Mode/S'Effect arse. "Yes" this what they bring because they are out numbered ofc?

So please and Co stop crying about blobs you are just being out blobbed like poor old Brix are out blobbled by you whiners and we still jump into your blob and several sc's DON'T we.

We are having a blast and when you kick us, then we do something else and we will move to NPC space and blob 50 man corp, so stfu and fight till you lose your moons or a few big toys.

Perhaps you're slow on the uptake but that's been the goon's tactic from the beginning, they out number you, they SWARM you.

If you have 500 well train well shipped pilots, of course they're not going to take on in Drakefleets.

If you want a fight, get in decent ships, try to conceal your numbers and fight them on "their" terms.

            April 17, 2012 at 12:52 pm
          16. Round & Round We Go

They aren't pussies, they just choose to engage in fights that they win. They win the majority of fights otherwise they would be in a state of constant retreat from Delve, to Tenal, to Vale of the Silent.

I feel people are just angry that the CFC has found a way to play the game that suits them, and win in doing so. So they nitpick things like blobbing. Is blobbing annoying? Of course it is, but then again so is losing. Anytime an entity wins the losing scrubs point to something and say "see that's why they are winning, and its not fair!"

This happens to EVERYONE. Maybe its PL and their metagaming, Raiden. with superblobs, CFC with subcapblobs, Northern Coalition with its extensive blue list, DRF with its RMT, or <insert whatever my EVE short history has forgotten>.

Stop complaining about how you are losing to unfair tactics, contact the enemies of your enemy who can be your allies and devise a strategy to beat them. The CFC is hardly unbeatable. I can say that they won't be beaten (or stop blobbing) by your shouts of ungentlemanly conduct.

            April 17, 2012 at 8:56 pm
          17. Imigo

My only issue with your comment is "DRF with its RMT" – botting and RMT are outside the rules of the game, while everything else you mentioned is within them. If it's cheezy or cheap tactics (like Neutral RR) it's still within the rules of the game no matter how much you or I or anybody else might not like it. Cheating however is not ok.

    Breaking news:

NCdot called in ewoks, evoke and IRC to help out with a fight in venal. IRC sent a small fleet to venal, but never actually engaged in the fight, instead opting to duke it out with a -A- oracle fleet in Tribute:

Meanwhile, DBRB's alt, Jarna Civire, convo'd the IRC fleet, and said, basically, "Mittens warned you, you ignored it, now your CSAA's are in trouble." DBRB then raced his 200 goon fleet back to Cobalt Edge, attacked a JB POS and a CSAA POS. IRC put up a Maelstrom fleet and a harassing bomber fleet, and NCdot brought in a small Tengu fleet, but without much effect.

It is unclear at this point whether:

    – Goons ever intended to NOT attack IRC;
    – IRC was intentionally flaunting the "warning" Goons sent them, or just misunderstood what was and wasn't "allowed" according to Mittens blustering;
    – Goons are now going to split their already slightly overextended attention between their so-called "bonus round" against NCdot in Venal and their promised retribution anti-csaa campaign in Cobalt Edge.

With the amount of effort the likes of Raiden. and NC. put forth, the scales are favorable for the CFC. Combine this with the fact that the CFC has a silent pact with PL and now Ev0ke and the outcome becomes even more lopsided. IRC are fun fights but not a powerbloc, more like the kid brother that needs a timeout. That leaves entities like AAA, who despite their chestbeating, aren't a threat to the CFC, only the poor newbs blindly jumping into gatecamps.

The matter of fact is that when a coalition can throw together, two full cap fleets, two full alpha fleets and two drake fleets, you would be unwise to escalate conflicts beyond the friendly roam. Any replies crying about blobs will be dismissed with a roll of the eyes. Please spew your tired arguments to someone who actually cares.

We should all just hold hands while singing kumbaya, and blue everyone around us b/c clearly thats how you play this game.

And another thing, when has IRC ever been considered a powerblock? thier solar pets, and have been for the last two years. Pretty much everything this clown said screams that he has no clue what eve is about, or who is even playing it.

What you seem to be failing to realise is that while the old NC embraced the carebear and almost literally /did/ hold hands and sing kumbaya, the CFC is very much not the old NC.

The old NC was non-expansionist and didn't really invade much, and even when it did it was fairly half-hearted. Of course they didn't have much need to invade anybody to get fights because people would always come to them. Why travel for entertainment when the best entertainers regularly come to your door.

The CFC is much more inclined to get out and burn you to the ground (for most values of you) than the NC ever was.

Of course, they *may* rethink about their requirements to join the ~elitepvp~ bunch.

Not everyone flies a personal carrier.
            Not everyone has 40M+ SP.
Not everyone has hordes of alts with infinite income to sustain any battle forever.

I don't blame them. They want to select carefully their pilots. (Well, at least pilots that don't fit gyrostabs on Erebus, at least! 😉 ) That's their full right, and I respect it.

But if they need numbers, maybe – just maybe – they could be less picky.

If they keep their elitist stance – which is fine by me – they will *always* be outnumbered. If you paint yourself in the corner of the gaussian, you then shouldn't complain the rest of the world is on the other side.

PL and goons have a good deal going that is continuing. The same deal that NC. had but couldn't seem to keep. I think all this goon hate deserves a little reflection, don't you think?

Why do Goons insist on blobbing in a Massively Multiplayer game anyway? I mean only half of the promotional material for EVE features epic fleet fights.

Everybody should play the way I expect them to so that I don't get any unpleasant surprises, because that takes real skill. Blobbing simply doesn't agree with my world view so all those other people are bad for being different to me.

Think about how fun the game was back in 07, was alot more fun, there were more big players, not as big or as powerful as the big players of today, but there were many more and you could go out in a small gang, and not get blobbed. No question it was a funner time, and less perdictable. Why goons, or goon pets don't understand this, we may never know, but you can't blaim people for wanting the game they fell in love with back.

Yeah, back in 2007 when the average concurrent logins was around half what it is now, the same amount of people online at one time as there is just before downtime now. When it's REALLY quiet and you hardly run into anybody you're naturally unlikely to be blobbed.

What he said was actually true, it was much easier to find good fights back then, I use to fly like five gate jumps, and fight my neighbours all the time, and I think most would agree a 30 versus 30 is a much better experience then a 500 versus 500, or whatever stupid number the CFC puts together. In all honesty, Nullsec atleast feels emptier now then it did back then. I blaim alot of the emptiness on tech, back then people did PvE stuff alot more, and you could always find people to gank, now people sit in station and ship spin b/c thier ship replacment programs means they don't need to do as much PvE crap to afford shps to fight in. This is something CCP, and the CSM have been talking about for a good year now. The truth is, back then nullsec had more people actually flying around in space, even thought the game pop. may have been lower.

Gonna point out that people still complained about blobs back then, and as far back as 06 when I started. Admittedly, the blobs then complained about were 30 man blobs, and a 100 man fleet would kill the server, but hey, it was way better, right?

Sorry, I like small gangs, but I also like the epic battles.

On a random stoned note, maybe we should have CFC leadership challenge all comers to Epic Rap Battles of History in order to determine sov?

            April 17, 2012 at 7:22 am
          2. Imigo

Tech is certainly a factor in providing bigger more concentrated fights, but if you're complaining about the numbers one entity can bring to a fight you also need to consider how many people are actually playing the game in the first place.

Check to see what I mean – in 2007 the daily average never goes much over 20k (which is about as many as there are at the quietest time now), and now it's around 32k.

The issue I have with the blob whining is that I have no trouble finding small gang fights. Sure, having 0.0 sov occupancy incredibly high would be nice so that finding small gang fights would be easy (and let's face it, it wouldn't be as satisfying if everything were easy), but most players have caught on to what is effective and what isn't and new players are picking up the tricks from older players too.

What Goons and CFC have done is found what works in the game environment AS IT IS, rather than whining about how they would /like/ it to be. Adapt or die.

"Why everybody else don't understand this, we may never know, but you can't blame people for doing what's successful." FTFY

and nobody but Goons thought these were good ideas right???

I'm all for proposing reasonable changes to improve the game, but whining that other people have found a means to benefit and protect their own interests in the current environment is ultimately futile.

One change that needed to happen years ago back when old NC was still around, and to this day still encourages blobs, is blues being able to use jb's, and blues beimg able to use titan bridges. I'd love to see them removed altogether to be honest.

Arbitrary restrictions are counter-productive to an emergent sandbox. Besides, people will just find a way to work around it to do what works for them, they always do.

Back in 07 you (and me, for that matter) was MUCH less of a bittervet than you are now.

The key part here is "bitter", not "vet".

Every game is glorious when you start it and everything is novelty and oooh-aaah. It washes away with time, in a far too natural way. The game is not any worse now than when you were a hopeless noob. Just your perception is different. The game nowadays is just as great, because – being a sandbox, you know – the game is what you make out of it.

Yeah, and why are there still people insisting on not nerfing Titans that can blap Battleships in seconds and hold their ground against the blob anyway? I mean, only half of the promotional material for EVE features giant ISK-, time-, effort-, skill-intensive space penises.

Everybody should blob because it's obviously the only successful form of teamplay, brings together the best players and doesn't allow any mistakes. Skill should not compensate numbers and doesn't agree with my world view so all those other people are bad for being different to me.

Also watching the enemy run is a laugh a minute on comms when you outnumber then enemy 5-1. This old tried and tested tactic of Goonswarm will come to an end one day. Waiting patiently for that day to arrive at the feet of Goonswarm will be better than a thousand blob fests and lost Tech moons. What Goonswarm cannot see is that the day is almost here.
