Jester’s Trek: exploitingeveiseasy.com

One of the most famed solo PvPers in EVE is a player named Garmon, who’s part of Hydra Reloaded.

Garmon puts out a series of PvP videos capturing his exploits called “Garmonation” (look it up on Google).  There’s now nine of these videos, documenting solo and ultra-small-gang exploits in a number of ridiculously expensive ships and fittings.  The most recent, Garmonation 9, includes PvP exploits in an Adrestia (a unique Gallente cruiser of which only a handful exist) and a Machariel.  This most recent video concludes with an announcement: Garmon and a couple of friends are getting ready to launch a new website to teach EVE advanced PvP techniques.  The website, http://www.eveiseasy.com/, includes a box to put in your e-mail address.  Once you do, you’re given access to several initial videos.

One can only assume that further videos will follow, but that those videos won’t be so freely available.

Of course, though, right when you’re launching a new business venture is the perfect time to be involved in a scandal.

First word of the potential scandal broke a couple of days ago, not long after this Rhea died.  From what I understand, the pilot bug-reported it, indicating that he was caught and aggressed by Garmon’s Vindicator outside a safe undock station, but not scrammed or pointed.  The Rhea pilot attempted to warp, but found himself unable to do so.  He was further unable to cancel warp in order to simply redock.  Assuming he was bugged, he apparently logged out, logged back in, was still unable to dock, and was killed shortly thereafter.

Garmon then apparently bragged that he had found a new way to kill jump freighters, and indicated that it would soon be a video on the eveiseasy website.

Suspecting something unusual was going on, about 90 minutes later, Pandemic Legion baited him into another attack, then hot-dropped him with super-carriers and killed the offending Vindi.(1)  And on the Vindi fit, PL confirmed there were no points and no scrams… just three very expensive Federation Navy webs.

It wasn’t long until people started playing with the mechanic on Sisi and determining how it worked.  Pandemic Legion immediately took the information gained and put it to use… not by telling CCP about it… oh no… by killing another jump freighter themselves with the exploit about six hours later.  Garmon, undaunted, fitted up another Vindi and got another JF a couple of hours after that.  And the race was on.

EVE News 24 first published an article asking for information, then put together how the mechanic works on Sisi and published it for all to see (text is courtesy of Zeroniss, and edited slightly for clarity):

It works on the principle that when you undock a ship, it is moving much faster than your maximum speed (especially in a freighter) if you hit warp, your ship tries to align while slowing down too (it is ESSENTIAL that your ship has to change alignment, instaundock will always work) this is when you slap it with triple webs.

Once the triple webs hit, under normal conditions your top speed is reduced to 1.1m/s. But your speed is still like 100/200ms as in the kickout from the undock, you won’t be able to stop the warp, you cannot dock either.

You never reach warp because your speed never [drops to 1m/s].  You can’t eject, you can’t DC because you are trying to initiate warp, you are ALWAYS going to die.

Needless to say, the fact that Garmon of all people was using a cheap exploit to score jump freighter kills soured people’s view of him pretty quickly.  As we know in the United States, it only takes one good solid scandal to burn away any goodwill you’ve built up over several years.  Michael Vick, John Edwards, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Martha Stewart, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.  Examples abound.  The jokes have already started: Garmonationexploitation and hackingeveiseasy.com being my two favorites so far.

Anyway, CCP caught wind of the scandal remarkably quickly and today, GM Grimmi issued this statement:

It has come to our attention that some players are making use of a broken game mechanic involving web modules preventing people from warping, for the purpose of killing them.  This is a clear exploit and anyone found abusing this will be dealt with accordingly.  Exploiting may result in a permanent suspension from the game.  Our Game Design team will be working to deploy a fix for this issue in the near future.

That statement was then modified and clarified to:

We’ve become aware of an exploit that is being abused by players to catch jump freighters in low-sec in order to kill them. By webbing a ship that has initiated warp, the victim will be rendered unable to cancel the warp in order to dock. This is a clear exploit and anyone found abusing this will be dealt with accordingly. Exploiting may result in a permanent suspension from the game. A fix will be deployed for this issue in the near future.

…presumably so that every person who lost a webbed ship wouldn’t petition their losses.  😉  The initial badly-worded statement shows how rapidly CCP wanted to get on top of this issue, so bravo to them for that.  It really speaks to both CCP’s sense of urgency to respond and the ability of the EVE media and fora to highlight an issue quickly.

So now the next question is how this will impact Garmon and his new business venture.  Will people forgive him his sins?  What if he apologizes?  American scandals tend to die down because Americans by their nature are a forgiving, generous people.  Hard-core EVE PvPers?  Not so much.  😉

Stay tuned.

(1) This quite possibly represents the one and only positive use of a super-carrier hot-drop on a sub-cap in EVE history.  😉  Best joke about this loss-mail, from several wags in various fora: “Think we’ll see this hot-drop in Garmonation 10?”

I agree. It doesn't change my opinion of him at all.

He did something that's an exploit, who cares. Those account for like 10 kills or something among the 40,000+ across all of his characters, and most of those took more skill than 99% of Eve players have ever shown.

imho the JF pilot consented to the PVP when he undocked and thus deserved to die, ok he should have been able to cancel warp & dock, but whatever EVE is a dark where you die when not paying attention. But using this to "smear" garmons new site? pfft, using that exploit imho shows that you're likely to get something out of it. Part of EVE (any game actually) is exploi err using the game mechanics to your advantage.
And how was that hotdrop positive? It was bad because afterwards PL used the exploit too. Two wrongs don't make one right.

Wait a second. You've provided three examples of JFs killed recently using this exploit, and apparently at least one of them petitioned it, but NONE OF THEM ARE GOONS. How can this be? Apparently CCP only change things to help Goons out because of a CSM conspiracy or Goon whining or something.

I don't quite understand it myself but people have been quite adamant that Goons are somehow to blame for this (and everything else).

Incursions are bad for eve, tho not as bad as bot or titans. Virtually risk free isk teaches people not to be smart, and when its the best isk making in the game, it teaches that smart isn't gonna help you get to the top anyway.

Do we not want smart players?

    2. Eve Online is devolving into a sort of Eve Online = Goons Online kind of perception, one which i feel is easy to "sell" towards other players and would be observers. And some players are putting some effort into preaching this wrong gospel.

Which is interesting since if the CSM chairmanship is won by the Mittani again (which is much likely) as this would do nothing to dispel this new wave of "Goons Online" bashing.

If taken out of proportion by would-be goon haters, this could drive the hand of CCP to act accordingly. After all, what's the idea of selling a sandbox when a good chunk of the outspoken players "preach" on how its owned by a single group? Thow in some memes, a #goonsonline hashtags and you got yourself a pretty solid campaign going on.

After the proposed titan/supers-nerf, this idea is seductive as a PR front against the DekCo since many felt these nerfs only benefit GSF and Co, which isn't really the case.

This is ofc a maliciously spreadable perception, IMHO goons doesn't control EVE, at least not in the near future. But still I can see how this could be successfully sold by parties wishing to get back at the DekCo and put some pressure on CCP Games through the media.

      I blame T20.

Well you see those three JF pilots (like most accounts in eve) are actually goon alts.

In fact no matter where you are in eve (running incursions in highsec, mining in highsec, doing level 4s in highsec, etc.) you can be pretty sure that everyone in local that isn't you, or in your 2 man corp, is probably a goon or secretly helping the goons.

Also the mittani said that if he wasn't elected as the CSM chairman he'll get all the goons and their alts to blow up Jita, because that's totally possible and very much going to happen.

When crucible was released not too long ago… they changed the un-dock timers to a twenty second invulnerability timer and a ten second re-dock timer.

So… you had ten seconds to re-dock if it was too nasty outside.

All this whining gets anoying. CCP does good to look into the matter and actually do something about the definition of warp status and when you should be able to cancel it. Webs are perfectly working as intended though. I myself lost multiple pimped out ships to this mechanic as well, be it in highsec to webbing navy npcs (well obivously these were just travel shuttles and frigs) or while evacuating from a battle gone south in a nanoship which suddenly gets rapier webbed while the warp is allready initiated. All this whole drama made clear is that 99% of people actually have no clue about pvp mechanics. But who would expect any different if all pvp the people ever do is to right klick titan and bridge, approach anchor and press F1?

As to Garmon: He uses all gamemechanics avaible to get an edge in combat. Considering that this "exploit" has been known for years, and never has been acknowledged as one by CCP, why not use it to gank a freighter pilot who obviously did not know what he was doing?

This only proves Garmon knows what he's doing and that he's pushes the envelope for unorthodox tactics. The mechanics behind it have been there since Eve was launced, have been well documented and most PvPers know to use it to their advantage.

The new thing Garmon brought to the table is the tripple webbing Vindicator, and using it to kill JumpFreighters on stations. When he did it, it had not yet been deemed an exploit, and was a perfectly legit kill. In essence, Garmon managed to do what faction police does to undocking pirates in hisec every day.

All my internet points goes to Garmon, who once again proves he's ahead of the curve.

Then you remember class 6 nova wormhole and it's bonuses… and many many more. This is surely not exploit since it's game mechanic programmed. It is not done buy any external tool or forcing server. Garmon will be fine. This exploit is minimal compared to the other more harmful ones floating around. That being said, Garmon > Rote. Because that's the only reason Jester is trying to add fuel to the fire.

Example, I play on an all crit TF2 server with only 1 map. Always play as soldier, and always end up getting all sorts of dominates and multi-kills etc b4 getting killed. And people rage and tell me im hacking (wall hacks) when i seemingly blindly fire in a direction someone is about to turn a corner. Or fire someplace i shouldn't see anyone but end up getting 3 kills with 1 hit. It's not hacking in the least. It's taking advantage of the game mechanics.

Moral of the story, till CCP comes out and says it's an exploit…it's just taking advantage of a game mechanic. Afterall…that 2 Trillion ISK "exploit" got nothing but applause.
