It you have been paying attention to dotlan, you may have noticed that SOLAR is gaining a lot of systems and Shadow of xDeath is losing a lot of systems.  Now, granting, “a lot” is a relative thing.  Shadow has gone from 260-some systems to 240-some.  A 20 system loss for most alliances is shocking.  This was less than an 8% decrease for Shadow.  If that was all that was going on, this wouldn’t really be newsworthy.  Add to that the 11 Shadow corps that have bailed so far this month, and the story gets a bit more interesting.  Except, Shadow had over 200 corporations in it at the beginning of the month.  So, we’re really only talking about a 5% loss of corps, and most are smaller corps, so the member loss is… not even noticeable.  So, why am I writing about this?  Shadow’s kill stats are also dropping.  They are hovering at a dismal 45% efficiency (even Test alliance, full of suicide ops, stays around 70% efficiency).  But, Shadow’s efficiency has always been rather… well… around 50%.  So, the drop isn’t really all that telling.  Especially considering their stats are pulled down by this Hel loss.

Wait.  Hold the press.  Now we’re getting into the meat of this story.  If you haven’t clicked on that killmail link, I will sum it up in four words: Pandemic Legion Killed It.  Yes.  PL have reset Shadow.  No, PL has not reset Legion.  It is an ominous turn of events.  It seems Legion is letting their pet-filled alliance try to make it on their own.  PL and Legion had been in discussions about the SOLAR threat.  It seems Legion decided to let Shadow go… and didn’t mention it to Shadow’s leadership.  Shadow corps have been evacing to low sec for the past two days in droves.   Against All Authorities, known for being supercapital shy, apparently feels confident enough about Shadow being hung out to dry that a few of their titan pilots have been camping jump bridges/stations picking off people as they try to flee.  Pandemic Legion has all but given them the bro-nod to go wild as PL supers leave the area and AAA supers enter the area.

It has been rumored that Legion’s plan of battle is to leave SOLAR and AAA to gorge themselves on Shadow’s space, then hit them when their pilots have become weary of structure grinds.  Forgetting that SOLAR and AAA can simply continue to harass Shadow pilots, decreasing Shadow income, until they simply cannot continue to pay the sov bills.  It is the long game, but my god, it is easier than grinding through 200+ systems’ worth of structures.  Rumors are also flying about diplomatic discussions between CFC and Legion, but are more likely of the “you’re losing space, sucks to be you” variety.  CFC seems content to sitting in the west, poking alliances to the north and south to keep their players happy.  Raiden, however, is rumored to have been asked to attack Legion from the north.  It is doubtful they would move against Legion unless Goons were over there as Goons and Raiden are having a bit of a staring contest right now.  Neither willing to blink, let alone look at something else.

All this fighting in the drone regions, and no one has yet to stop and ask “wait, aren’t drone regions about to get nerfed?”  CCP has already suggested that drones will start having bounties rather than drone mineral loot.  Will the drone regions continue to have the same draw after this change or not?  It remains to be seen.  For the time being, however, it looks like SOLAR is quite happy to grind through the sov slog to take Shadow’s space.

RMT empire will never collapse.. they just pack up.. to deploy on the otherside of the universe and continue.. Plus my guess is that they don't have all their botters in 1 alliance :)…let's call it risk spreading

As a former shadow of xdeathx member, there are quite a few real people in there, the alliance channel was always full of conversations. There's also a lot of station spinners and 'moon goo pays the rent, so I don't do anything else' people. Other than the station systems, I bet the majority are only one or two tower systems that will fall relatively quickly once any support is cut off. I see Solar Citizens is already picking up some of the leaving corps and giving them spots in Insmother though, so overall it will probably just be a shift from one to another.

I'm not saying that they're all botters, but I know that there are a lot there being a former XWX member myself. It's just nice to see that people who are known to RMT are failcascading and having their income reduced.

Actually you call it risk management…or even hedging. You get corps into two renter alliances on either side of a fight…whichever side wins you move to that one and continue as before.

No, I don't bot…this is just really common sense stuff.

There is a recording floating around of a recent xdeath meeting, in which UAxDeath announces that their opposition (specifically including Intrepid Crossing) turned out to be tougher than expected, and that they were going to "regroup" for now.

Meanwhile, the first two stations in Oasa have fallen to IRC, and more are scheduled in the coming days.

I like the brush off given to the relationship between Goons and xDeath, when it is clear xDeath attacked IRC as part of a goon deal/strategy to take Tenal from Raiden.

You heard it here first: xDeath is going to move closer to Goons to help in the upcoming universal nul sec war.

We're easy to underestimate… being generally lazy and comparatively peaceful folks, we only go to war when we're really, really angry or Solar needs a hand.

Thus, people get into this mode of thinking where they conclude that "IRC isn't at war because they can't fight wars" when the truth is just that we have what we need, and do not yet have any desire whatsoever to expand.

So it's worth pointing out that we're not even really planning to keep any sov we take in this war. Most likely anything we don't use as a jump bridge leg we'll just give to Solar. We're only doing this because when a neighbor breaks a NIP treaty, that neighbor needs to stop being a neighbor.

The rumor is that what is left of the XIX empire is going to Fountain. Sorry TEST: Goons are going to try to let their old bros crash on your couch.

I like the part in his speech to the troops on TS early this week where XIX claimed that his attacks on Cobalt Edge last week (which broke the truce brokered by PL / NC.) were a pre-emptive attack and were going to prevent IRC from attacking him. Then, the last couple days, he was telling people IRC STARTED this second push!!! Does he know that at least some of XIX / XWX membership can read and can see KBs that show his SBUs in our space BEFORE you see IRCs in his?

Even IRC knows you break your word with PL and you might as well start your WoW subscription.

Not really sure why anyone is focused on Shadow, the renter alliance. If Solar and -A- want to avoid the grind, then offer space to the Shadow renters and start collecting the checks. Hell, some of these guys will probably help knock down some of that sov in the process. It's not like Shadow is a threat to anyone. It was never organized to be anything but a renter alliance. Switching sides and changing the color of thier skin to blend. They have been doing this since the first goons war, all the way back to when thed fed IRC to the sharks. Then they literally stumped out ATLAS and tried to stump out -A- , Just go through the last 5 years of eve and you will see how xdeath has always been the winner of eve. My hats off to them for being the ONLY major alliance to never lose thier space in the last 5 years. But the time has come and finally all eyes are on them. If you think drone regions is useless space, you must be really confused by the incoming drone nerf-bat.

It takes a lot of infrastructure to get the most out of drone space, but if you can pull it off, it's way better than normal 0.0… or will be, until they take away drone goo -_-.

        March 16, 2012 at 12:06 am Reply
        1. not really, drone space is great for building stuff but you get no mods, nothing of any real value other then the ability to make things cheaper. You can do that anywhere else too by reprocessing the mods you get from bounty rats, AND you will get faction/deadspace mods from the rare spawns, on top of the T2 salvage. Couple that with moons and you can see why drone space is in DIRE need of a buff.

Bounty Drones will wreck the mineral economy (and the entire eve eco) for a while until supply meets the demand. Already prices are going up because of the war and as such the normally steady flow of minerals is drying up.

          1. meh

Oh, if you can talk them into *buffing* drone regions, go for it…

But changing from goo to bounties isn't a buff. Regional prices will shoot up, our incredible local market might collapse (most of the stuff we actually use, we get cheaper than Jita), and while yes, we'll probably be making 15 million isk an hour more, we'll also be spending that right out again to compensate for high-sec logistics from the ass-end of space.

We like that Cobalt Edge is completely independent. It's one of the few places in EVE where you can live just fine while completely cut off from high sec. Changing to bounties will take a bite out of that, and we'd rather not.

Moons would be nice though, I admit.

You're right that we don't want the space. We have no need of more space at the moment, and unlike xdeath we have no interest in expanding our borders beyond what we can effectively defend.

But this isn't a war of aggression. Your overlords thought they could roll us, so they broke a NIP treaty.

We don't require our neighbors to be blue… we like roams in our space and nearby PVP. We permablue for friendship, not so much for convenience (that's what temp-blue is for). We do, however, require that our neighbors honor treaties they sign with us, particularly ones that involve not dropping SBUs in our market hub.

We didn't think it was too much to ask, but apparently we were overly optimistic.

Unless you control your own destiny, which invariably you as a pilot or even your corp does not, the vast majority of nullsec inhabitants are renters of one sort or another. Shadow paid straight rent to be left alone and individually each corp could do as they wish and had no further obligations. Pets on the other hand typically pay some alliance dues and have other obligations. Pay in isk, time, sweat or blood: you're still a renter. But keep making yourself feel like you have somehow earned your place in nullsec because it's more likely someone just let's you live where you do for a reason that suits them.

      1. Former Shadow

That was the largest failure of shadow in the end: no organized combat capability. The desire among some was there. You can check the December thru February killboards to see clearly who those corps are. Unforunately, the organizational structure for harnessing the inherent combat potential of an alliance with 7000 members was utterly lacking. Hence when the walls come down, the serfs are unable and/or unwilling to put their pitchforks to good use.

Yeah, it would be awesome if you could pitchfork well, but you can't and thats part of the reason people in pvp alliances take you lightly.

P.S. to the neg reps I was stating how the attitude is, not that it was necessarily right. But this is EN24 and it is more fun to neg rep then think about what was actually said.

The term pets is idiotic. Folks wanting to come out to nul sec are not going to make it on their own, and have to align themselves with someone more powerful. That's called diplomacy. Most major alliances count on their weaker partners to fill a void they themselves cannot easily counter. Some argue that Test, GA, FC, TNT, SM and GOML are our pets, and maybe they could not survive on their own against the other larger power blocks. They still do well enough on their own in every other way, and get more powerful every passing week.

Renters on the other hand, add nothing but easy isk to their landlords wallets. Run a gang through their system and they all dock up. And yes, *citizen* alliances are renters. All they are expected to do is pay a percentage to the local overlords. That is bad for eve.

My previous alliance was renting in Querious, so when a Goon Vagabond came in to our system, he crashed the gate and ran like hell. Later we gorged on a Convicted Loki who thought we were the sort to hide in POS's. I like people like you, we get great kills, I also like those pubby renters, they hide sharks like us…

The term "pets" was the result of people more familiar with how WoW works than with how international diplomacy in the real world works, grasping for language to describe a common socio-political phenomenon: the "client state". And there are many varieties of client state, both in the real world and in Eve. "Pet/renter/BFF" is too limited a set of categories to properly describe the whole spectrum of complex relationships found throughout 0.0.

The same thing could be said of membercorps. if they don't pay by showing up to Op fleets, or generate alliance level income through rat bounties, or contribute logistics, then they get kicked from the alliance and run out of 0.0. I fail to see the distinction between a supposed "pet" and a full fledged member in your example.

Renters, on the other hand, pay only to be left alone. They have no loyalties, one master is just as good as the other for their purposes. Some would say a minority of those renters are there to advance their corp up the ladder of importance by showing up to CTA's, improving their KB stats, and otherwise being useful to their overlords. That is how my corp started out, and I'll tell you it's a long, painful road. You are better off just apping to Goons, or TEST, or some other entity that doesn't rent and takes anyone who can spell their name correctly.

Lies, Scams, Back Stabs surround his past dealings, and anyone that is said to have dealt with him, knows he's all about chasing the digital paper. He doesn't lead by example, teaching others… He leads by controlling players, and eliminating those who can think for themselves.

Their main "Masters" will probably be IRC, not SOLAR directly. (TBH, I believe they are looking to become more of a little brother to IRC and Solar and not a pet or a renter.)

IRC was the one who originally threatened them. IRC was the one active in their space. IRC is the one who got them to flip. IRC never flipped on Brew. They were much more consistent and well, sane, than the XxDeathxX crew during this war. SOLAR was a bit further away, but was very good to them too. -A- is just very active in former XiX/xWx space (probably as active as Solar and IRC) and so I'd imagine Brew is just looking to blue to keep all of its energy focused on xxdeathxx.

"people" are, indeed, stupid, and when dealing with a hive mind you can expect it to deteriorate to the lowest common denominator.

Renting alliances are not hive-minds, so you're dealing, instead, with 7000 "persons" and an individual person has a very clear understanding that he is being asked to pay for the right to fight for the right to pay less for the right to die horribly as your meatshield.

    Fail stats are fail.

Almost any large alliance will have close to 50%. If they don't, then it is one of,

    1. they are above average – something that is not really possible for anything that is large (eg. R&K are not a large alliance :)

    2. they fly with lots of "buddies" outside of their alliance, boosting their mutual stats

So, if you have allies and you fly with them, your stats will be boosted. The lower your numbers in proportion to total fleet size, the higher your stats. This would be like most alliance in CFC.

If you don't understand this, then sucks to be you. I guess you can gloat how TEST 70% "efficiency" is higher than Raiden's 60%.

I think some people have some misperceptions about Legion and Shadow and their relationship.

For as long as I can remember there has been several distinct groups within shadow (Legion alts, Russian corps, Euro corps, US corps, and small amount of Aussie toons/corps) . For the most part the russian corps/legion alt corps did their own thing with little communication or impact from US time zone. The US Corps/EU corps/Kiwieaters usually did their own thing , usually on their own with no involvement with others except where necessary.
During beginning of NC war communication between groups improved a little but gradually returned to prewar levels (little to none).
At some point around middle of 2011 there was a some form of management change within shadow and communication increased (at least to the english speakers). Late in 2011 around October I think, was when the attempt to forge some form of weapon out of the US/EU corps started. This was shortly before the hostilities with Solar started. A coincidence??? No such thing in Eve!!!

Participation was spotty at best with a few corps/toons accounting for most of the participation . While it was fun to get a little more organized PvP action, it was also pretty damn frustrating trying to get more people to show up. At this time I would have to say it was to little to late (should have been done a year before) but in the big picture I dont know if it would have accomplished much. Probably would have at least stalled initial IRC Oasa invasion but thats about it.
Questionable decisions were made , but most decisions made by the russian alliances appear questionable and really its better not try to make sense out of what they do.
In conclusion Im gonna share with everyone the greatest piece of advice I was ever given.

"When you are thrown into a bucket full of turds, the taste in your mouth is the least of your worries"

    1. Fancy That

If you want renters to participate in PVP, offer them fleet fits, promise reimbursement for any lost ships, and rent forgiveness for participation.

If you want people to PVP on their own dime, you have to offer them pride, purpose, dignity and a really nifty logo… which are in short supply in a renter shell.

      March 16, 2012 at 9:26 am Reply
    2. BAMbam

Renters make poor CTA choices. They're often terrible at pvp, turnup in mixed fleets with crap fits and in most cases dont want to pvp at all (Its also very annoying when someone whos killboard sports one kill and 56 losses preaches why his PVE fit is superior to your PVP fit at pvp).

Though to be fair why should they? They're paying for their space and that should ensure they dont get farmed to death or worry about SBUs turning up in their home system.

If your planning on using renters as meatshields your either desperate or stupid

      March 16, 2012 at 5:47 pm Reply
      1. meh

Everyone is terrible at PVP until they do it for a few years.

I think of Solar and IRC as the ideal relationship between a power bloc and "pet" – every year IRC got less pet and more powerful, and *this* year they demonstrated themselves capable of 1v1ing Legion.

Yeah, Legion aint what it used to be, but that's still a pretty powerful statement.

So now, for their trouble, Solar has an increasingly powerful and absolutely loyal ally, instead of a flaky renter shell that starts making diplomatic bids with the enemy before the war even starts.

0.0 in eve is like the Feudal system in Europe or Japan………or pre-world war area conflicts. Take Austria for example, in the late 1800's to 1914 Austria was a weak country, but thru alliances with other powers and forcing wars it appeared strong, thus survives. Renter or pet its basically the same thing, if your a lord and your renters/pet get out of line you put them back in line or get rid of them.

Only thing about this write up which is kinda ridiculous is the killboard efficiency chestbeating that Bagehi did near the start. You have to be pretty ignorant not to understand why an alliance that fly in mixed fleets(several entities in the same fleet) like test, and an alliance that doesn't like shadows, or pretty much any alliance not in the CFC circle jerk.

It's not just Bagehi really, seems alot of people that play eve don't really have a simple understanding of math to understand that the killboard "efficiency" stat has little to do with how good, bad or efficient a individual/corp/alliance is.
