Two days ago, I received an email from a member of a low sec FW/pirate corp, Almity. I could feel the giddy in their request if I was interested in a story. Their corp includes Shalee Lianne, a tweetfleet person, so I must admit to having a certain level of expectation of epic battle when I responded.  I was intrigued, partly because Shalee has a tendency to tweet about rather successful PVP roams on a regular basis, but also because I have a soft spot for the smaller battles of Eve.  A was hoping for something along the lines of “we caught a super carrier ratting in low sec and picked it apart with 10 HACs over the course of 4 hours” or a similar tale of epic low sec battle.  Turns out they live in Otosela.  Otosela has been used as a staging system for Test Alliance in their campaign with PL/NCdot against SOLAR.  The opening of the report went like this:

Test Alliance came into Otosela earlier last month with a bang. Our sleepy little system’s local count went from a dozen Imperial Outlaws and a few neutrals to hundreds in a matter of hours. Chaos ensued as many POS’s were reinforced then destroyed; Test POS’s went up and super capitals and Titans were brought in.

From that point on, I was hooked on what turned out to be an tale of the side conflict that Test had going on in the down time between major ops against SOLAR.  Now, mind you, Test Alliance has numbers.  5337 according to DotLan.  Imperial Outlaws have a total member count of 31, small enough that they do not even register on DotLan’s website.  That these two entities could both have fun shooting each other is a sign of the genius (accidental or purposeful) that is Eve PVP.  It is also a lesson for the whiners who use the word “blob” in conversation about battles or wars they have lost.

There was the requisite banter in local as well as outright local spam and trolling (they made a blog to commemorate some of the more epic comments here).  Despite, or possibly because of the local banter, Imperial Outlaws decided to stay in Otosela and make the best of the situation.  Test, always up for fights, was happy to shoot it up with them.  Imperial Outlaws knew low sec mechanics well.  Test have limitless funds compared to them.  In the end, many ships died, and it seems both sides came out of the month of combat with smiles on their faces.  Having been on deployment one or two thousand times myself, I have to give a tip of the hat to any locals who stick around and help fill the down time between fleets with the much more satisfying and fun small gang combat.

The member of Imperial Outlaws who provided the information to me very clearly saw their combat statistics as a huge victory for them.  It must have been exhilarating going toe to toe with a large alliance like Test.  Not to denigrate the low sec lifestyle, as I have enjoyed it quite often during my time in Eve, but it does tend to give you a different perspective on small gang warfare than that of a null sec existence.  They triumphantly provided their campaign statistics:

Imperial Outlaws: Test Campaign

Which shows the impressive number of hurricanes and rifters they mowed through in the last month.  Again, putting myself in their shoes, they must have had a blast.

They did catch a few choice kills: Pilgram, Broadsword, Widow (oops!), and a Navy Scorp.

Imperial Outlaws are coming out of this conflict battle tested and dripping in kills that make them the envy of other low sec groups.  They likely learned a few tricks on combating enemies who bring superior numbers.  They may or may not have learned some lessons about how null sec alliances fight (of note, Test doesn’t conduct combat quite the same as other alliances).

Test, on the other hand, came out of this having had a blast.  A near constant supply of small gang PVP close at hand is absolute heaven for a null alliance these days.

I’m sure everyone who partook of the PVP of Otosela this last month will come away with a few entertaining stories and quotes.  These are the stories and fights that keep me logging in.

TEST? Having *FUN*? Quick, someone light a dozen cynos in Fountain. We must remove this menace from the galaxy and replace it with baby back bitch-tear-crying titan blobbers and Eastern European corps who don't speak a lick of any intelligible languages.

A 30 man low sec corp not just standing against but winning against a 5K+ nullsec alliance? YehM8, sounds pretty damn win to me. Imperial Outlaws sound like a good gang to fly with, I don't think they're super mega elite, but they know how to play eve and fly ships properly. If I was going to be unfairly uncharitable to Outlaws I'd say that they were decent team of above average skill and it's Test's consistently appalling performances that make Outlaws appear better than they possibly are.

The scorpion navy lossmail was from a guy who had gotten it as a secret santa gift and vowed to lose it in a hilarious way. He had one miner on it so he warped to a belt and mined for about 10 minutes while telling the pirates in local that he was, they didn't bite. He then warped to station and aggressed them all and they jammed out our carrier repping him and undocked 5-10 people and a neut geddon and promptly popped him.

Suddenly we have a Noir contract against us lol, that's how test pvp's they hire mercenaries. I can't wait to fight Noir now as I was in the best merc Corp in the game and it sounds like so much fun.

59 Frigates and 93 CAPSULES, Approx 58% of the "kills". Check your facts before sperging. I don't call 152 Frigate/pod kills out of a total 257 news worthy. Author should have checked facts before he wrote this.

Admittedly, much were cynos and frigs being popped with arty. But with 80-120 TEST in system with caps and supers out, often on undock, we used what we could. Did it require much skill? Not usually. Would've liked a few more real fights, but, either way, 12 bil in losses isn't anything to scoff at.

I love how TEST pretends not to give a fuck about I.LAW but then they turn around and add I.LAW as a red to the alliance, then a month after moving in move all their shit out of Otosela all within a couple of jumps. So they wanted to stay in the area, talked a bunch of shit when moving in, and then were forced to leave because they couldn't figure out a way to retaliate. But they'll just tell you they don't care. Yeah a lot of kills were cyno frigs, but there were also 35 bc, 14 bs, 52 covert ops, inties, logi, recon, it's not like some of the guys didn't try to put up a fight. They'll just tell you it's because it's low-sec and it's for 'noobs'. Most of our members have been in faction warfare for years where we undock and there's a fight waiting for us within only a couple of jumps. I'm sure there are some good test pvp'ers somewhere but the 90% that make up their meat shield are total idiots.

You fuckbrained RPer we moved to bwf because that shithole of a system you call otosela had no repair stations and test leadership is horrible at staging systems not because your uberpvp lowsec rp corp killed too many of our rifters. You know we have this thing called test_free where they literally hand us rifters to welp? Oh noes my kb efficiency. Silly rpers who thing they have significance.

We moved into Otosela because it had free offices. However there were not enough for our alliance. We then moved into BWF because between 8MG and BWF there were more offices to fill then we had corps.

You may of noticed the surrounding systems had 3-4 other major alliances staging out of them. We had to find space somewhere so we could get ourselves podded without going back to Fountain.

  17. Well, I'm just glad to see EvENews24 actually caring to write about something that goes on outside Nullsec – even if the story had to involve Test Alliance for it to be considered "interesting" enough to report on.

The author did a standup job of attempting to portray Imperial Outlaws as a bunch of scrubs "learning to fight the pros" when we all know what was really going on.

Mark my words – by the end of March, no one is going to look at Faction Warfare pilots the same way.

EvE Online players will learn some important lessons about "hard power" vs. "soft power" over the next couple of months…..if they are paying attention!
