You just won a brand new flat screen tv: ready for pickup in your local captain’s quarter

You might or might not have noticed a thread a couple of weeks back where some rather tech-savvy EVE players managed to fiddle with a couple of files in the client, effectively enabling them to put their own video content onto the Captain’s Quarters main screen. Although we worship the sandbox and love it when you use our game to do things we could never have foreseen, we really don’t like it when people start fiddling with the EVE client files, mostly because it may get you into trouble the next time we send out a patch. We would much rather have you get into trouble within New Eden than outside of it.

The hack was as easy as replacing a .BIK (BINK) video file with one of your own .BIK files, putting you in charge of what’s on TV. Now, most companies would have branded this as a defect and “fixed it” by doing checksum validations on the files or something equally boring. But not us.

You are now exactly four steps away from activating your new, virtual, hundred-and-something inch flat screen television:

  1. Download the BINK(.BIK) video conversion tool from here: http://www.radgametools.com/down/Bink/RADTools.exe. Using this tool, you should be able to convert most of your videos to BINK format, which is the industry standard when it comes to video playback in videogames. I recommend starting the first conversion process straight away since it may take a while.
  2. Locate your EVE cache folder by following the guide found here: http://support.eveonline.com/Pages/KB/Article.aspx?id=371. Create a folder under your cache folder called “CQScreenVideos” if it doesn’t already exist.
  3. Once a video has been converted to BINK format, copy it to the “CQScreenVideos” folder.

Drop by one of your Captain’s Quarters and finally put that sofa to some serious use! Your custom videos will be played one after the next, followed by the normal screen content. The entire loop is then repeated.

While this is all good and fun, we must not forget that with great televisions comes great responsibility. Of course, knowing our players,  we are of course absolutely certain than none of you would ever, ever think of putting anything even remotely questionable on your screen, given the total lack of constraints and the rock solid moral high ground on which our pilots firmly stand… That said, in a case of your cat accidentally downloading, converting and displaying some morally hazardous material on your screen, you’ll have to take it up with it rather than us, okay?

Since we’re on the subject of screens

There has been a myth floating around CCP HQ that a rogue programmer left a secret encrypted message somewhere on the three screens. The programmer in question seems to have lost the plot a bit since he keeps repeating the words “space equals 20” when he thinks nobody is listening. We would really appreciate your help trying to pinpoint what exactly is going on here.

CCP Optimal

What do you think?

I will just point out a reference for discussion here, considering ship spinning and now this, our very own Bagehi commented:

CCP really looks like it is doing a 180
wow

Maybe its too soon to say, but we like what the latest developments. We already reported on the awesome ponies in stations, the possibilities are quite interesting, what would you put on this, wow if only I could get script to rotate videos feed on this. ^___^

Because they can't handle to run it. I have nothing wrong with CQ as long as it doesnt get in the way of FiS development. Today i spend hours sitting on the CQ staring at an ad-full TV with no content while waiting on other stuff to happen in-game. Might as well have some play/pause/next controls and be able to browse my video library for some funny videos.

Have your tried the logout button ? Do something else while you wait for stuff to happen in game ?

I'm not spending time (read wasting) looking at a fucking mini tv in my lcd when I could actually see the same movie fullscreen with better detail while I still wait for stuff to happen.

        Most useless shit ever…

    To CCP: Bravo!

Something nice, hopefully easy to implement on the resources side, and instead of getting in the way of your customers you made something that a few were doing easier and available to all.

    Keep it coming…

Custom BINK-playing billboards in space for sov holders, that *everybody* could see would make some sense

The problem with CQ apart from it being crap and pointless and nothing to do with spaceships or EVE is that it's a 100% single player part of a so called-MMOG. It's a fucking instance for christ sake, after all these years of CCP telling us EVE wouldn't be like that. If I found myself watching myself sitting on an e-sofa watching a video-in-a-video in my own private e-world, when I could just double click in explorer and watch it anyway without wasting 800Mb running EVE I'd probably kill myself(*)

got to agree, its sorta a silly querky thing to do especially when its local only, so even when they do add ability for others to join us they wont see it… what they should have announced is

"NOW LOAD HTTP STREAMS TO YOUR TV" that way everyone can watch it when they do come over….

Same goes for sov holder billboards!!!!!

I don't have CQ enabled.. That said, this is a great step in the right direction. A game that contains 90% player driven content should have development influenced to the same degree.

I'm hopeful….but not resubbing my 4 accounts until I see the FIS – or I find else to spend my money on…

Sooooooo..As a great Icelandic rap group one proclaimed . …… HURRY THE FUCK UP!

This is fine, a nice PR move from CCP, but it must be noted that it exhibits absolutely no new content and, from the favorable reaction I've already seen, is a very effective distraction from the obvious problems everyone bitches about.

Bravo CCP, and I expect another useless devblog next week, please.

Old news is a good few months old now… why are CCP trying to pass this off as a good thing NOW, and not originally when people were asking for a clarification as to whether it was legal or not? Or did everybody here forget the massive article when ponies were being played in CQ?

And more's the point – it feels like CCP are trying to take the credit by putting this out, instead of the guys who found out about the bik file swap in the first place…

I'm a little surprised at the hypocritical poastign here. When GTA allowed you to sit in your safehouse(s) and watch TV awhile back, it was cool as hell. It had nothing at all to do with the game there, either, yet people embraced it for what it was – an easter egg for the players. simple. end of.

Put your emotions in check for a minute and think about what CCP did here. Is it anathema to their normal way of thinking/implementing? Yeah, I'd say so. Is that a good thing? Hard to argue otherwise.

So give credit where credit is due. Don't fucking kick the dog for not going in the right direction, then kick him again when he does but isn't going fast enough. I think CCP deserves some encouragement here, maybe a "thank you – THIS is the type of thinking we appreciate and a step in the right direction. keep it up!"

    Carrots over sticks, gents.

People normally love modding… Once the 'Oh wow, you let us hack the client and called it a feature' reaction passes people will enjoy this… if they every decide to stop staring at the door.

so, "space equals 20" means space is about two zero(es), and they don't want to involve the CSM cos they think the CSM will try to push the changes in favor of the power blocks.

20 is the hex code for the space character in ASCII… you usually see this in url encoded stuff like %20

This is really a bullshit reaction of CCP. They said the TV would be dynamic. As it turns out, its static. They just dont want to spend more time repearing this. So they say. Its ok you change EVE files. Even though your not allowed to change anything when you read the EULA. So instead of actually doing something with the TV, CCP ignores it and hopes the community will also forget about it by telling its ok to change a file.
