A alliance or corporation, big or tiny, is only as good as it is leadership. Many people think that being a leader means you make your people blindly follow you and subdue to all demands. Leadership is way more listening than talking. Some might enjoy being commanded by the iron fist, however as human history shows, people respond to vastly better to positive stimulation and mutual cooperation in a respectfull way.

I enjoy eve and thats the reason I am still around even its more than 3 years i have seen it for the first time. I have fun with it and always made sure, that my players had and have fun with it as well. Its up to the others to judge, if I am and was a good leader, but i learned a lot through my and others mistakes, and as every day new leaders emerge, a good advice who chose and went this path might be worth reading.

The first question is, sort your thoughts and answer yourself – why do you want to be a leader and why do you want to start a corp / alliance. Many people think of it as unimportant, as they feel it inside, they should, but you have to come with a set of goals in order to make your group work. Trying to start only to satisfy your ego, stand out, boss others or just pick up plyers from people you hate isnt gonna make it, not in the long run. Goals are absolutely neccessary to make you a good leader and the whole direction of your group will be defined by them. And at moments of doubts, they will remind you, why did you chose to become a leader.

Keep your expectations achievable and perhaps little bit low at the beginning. Your expectations are projected into your groupmates expactations, and they form a bond. Set the bar too high, and even if you make it, your people might struggle.

You have two choices, if you just want to get a group to have fun together and dont have any big goals, you ahve to make sure, people in the group have egos and personalities that work well together, that fit. Thats much more important than any skill or in game achievments. If you set up more challenging goals, and want to enter the arena of 0.0, you must protect and build up your groups culture, that will be around always to keep people in line and that the goals are known to everyone and that everyone and their ego understands the need of sacrifices for the success of the group. Sometimes you will have to make tough decision and let people simple leave as they wont either fit to your culture or not understand the goal and greater good formula.

There is huge difference between management / bossing. Most people trying to become a leader are not suited for that and most will fail. Its always worth trying, but its the hardest path you can choose in game.

A lot of groups start by making a killboard, website, recruiting post and spam local chat. This isnt what a group will be defined by, its false pretense of it. Everything you will achieve in the game will consist at least partially on communication. Its the basis of all groups, take it as a huge concrete block at the bottom of the house you just started to envision in your head. There can be only one leader at one level, and there can be only one leader on top. You have to come with a clear chain of command and you have to make sure informations within leadership flow quickly. Even if there is one leader, activity and willingness to accept responsibility should show you, who from your people should be raised and given tasks to share the leadership burden with. However in the end, your decision is final and undisputable, as only this creates a clear end of discussions.

A integral part of any leadership is being positive and supportive. If you are not patient, don´t even try that. You will face different types of people, and if you want to avoid big troubles, your set goals and culture of the group will need to be promoted and understood. Every member needs to know what are the most important values seeked and what supporting skills and traits are wanted. People will understand those only if with a correct and mutual relationship, you started to form, when they first joined your group.

If you loose players, you should know that the biggest reason, why that happens is boredom, unclear view of their future and unsatisfied ego. Be ready to part ways with people, its not weakness to feel emotions when loosing them, but not everyone will and can be happy in your group and its usually way much better than try to push things over limit. As a leader, you will get lot of different sets of feelings. You have to accept geting hammered, dissapointed, annoyed, pushed to the limits. You also need to consider, that in every group, people will change minds, turn wrong and strike whenever you await it least.

Many problems come with egocentric players placing me in front of us. Most of the time they are also great players, very skilled and gifted and sometimes the best leaders come from them. I have seen, that only very rarely these people fit into your group and are more cause of troubles than benefiting the overall experience. Most leaders are as well afraid to get rid of them as they get things done and have strong aura around themselves. However very often they destroy the relationship, fun and culture of the group, by not respecting others and putting themselves in front of others. You and them will be much better going separate ways. The stronger your values are set and promoted, the faster these player weed themselves out. If a player gives you ultimatum, its time to let him go. Ultimatum as screaming is unacceptable and shows a selfish person not willing to negotiate a middle way between two opinions. People are not enemies and arguing together doesnt mean one has to loose and one has to win.

Don´t judge people only by statistics. It can be very deceiving, go by talking with the people and go by the feeling you have with them. Find out what are they looking for and why are they here. Many really good players that will benefit your group have crappy statistics and skill, but great attitude, that will pay hundred times back.Also, if you see they do not fit you, be honest and help em to find a group they might find more fun and happiness. You won´t be forgotten and you never know, where these people end up.

You have to be there for your players and you have to make sure they are not afraid to communicate with you. Always look around and dont be lazy and complacement to share a advice, a tip, a friendly word to encourage and support them. Your mid managment and your most active players, that you raised to the leadership, are your means of communication as well, as from certain size, you cannot actively focus on every player. Still, if any member wants to talk to you, he should have always the chance.

Don´t think about being supportive and positive as saying you did well. It is much more than that, it is making them feel and understand how they benefited the group and themselves in return and making them associate with group goals and find their strong and remove their weak points. Once people realize, they do well, they will feel better and will naturally do bad things less and less. Any notice on their path in becoming what a leader should always want, a happy caring and contributing member, makes their pilgrimage easier and enjoyable.

Its very well matter of personality traits and style, but for me any person that screams is weak and unmature. Its acting without thinking and you can surely do better than that. Its very easy to start yealling by first sign of trouble, its however the wrong choice. Its much better for youm as leader, to come with a solution, where people can save their face, are reminded of problems, but also showed, that they are not useless and that mistakes happen to everyone. How can you await, your mebers respect you, if you cannot control yourself, if youre a person that is is unable to go by example and show them, they can rely on you in bad times. Not many people enjoy being yelled and screamed at, and while amusing in some cases, with your raised voice you showed your weakness and fear. And you want to promote fun not fear.

Be diplomatic, and be ready to accept your own mistakes. Thats sign of great personality, learning from them and standing by your principles, which should be reflected in your groups core values.

Don´t be afraid of spies. Of course, you don´t have to make it easy for them, but in my experience no ammount of screening or spy checks will be ever perfect. Put people into positions, where they can succeed and be happy, don ´t put barriers into their path just because they could be the evil spies. Give em sense of accomplishment and always make sure they can see and feel the progress in motion.

Grow with slow pace and keep the organizational level always up to date. Adding people isnt problem, adding the right people is. Work from event to event, have as little idle time possible, always come with new ideas – they might be crazy as well – to create entertainment and fun. The more the merrier. Players want to login and have fun, give it to them and happiness factor will go into skyhigh magnitude.

Don´t neglect PR and your groups image. Thats what people will identify with and where many leaders have a lot to improve. No group is strong enough on its own, so build up connections, and make friends. Don ´t be afraid to aproach others, they wait for that. There is never shame to reach out a hand and come with a proposal. The shame is think about it and never do it. Ask yourself, what is my group, what goals do I have, what do I offer, what do I await and why should, if I would be a new player, join this group.

Some players will love you, some will hate you by heart, some will annoy you to death. Even though most people seek glory in being a leader, most of the time you don´t get any glory, your satisfaction will come from the achievements, you have to recognize. You wont be celebrated many times and your actions might not be accepted by everyone. You cant await what you will give, you will always get back. Don ´t be a leader and don ´t think there isn ´t a price tag attached. And rememeber that when things go wrong, you are the one responsible in the first place. Its a big burden and broad shoulders are needed to carry it.

Now you might be scared little bit and you shouldn´t. As in any activity, in game or in real life, remember this. You cannot fail till you give up completely. Plan ahead and ask yourself questions i mentioned earlier, and in the answers to them you find your ideal way. As no person will act like the other and advice is always great, in the end, it is your decision, your feeling and intuition will guide you. Because guess what – you are the leader and leaders lead. So get to it and get used to it, the game we all love needs you right now.

    Far as leaders go, they all seem to have 1 goal in mind how to make them selves appear to care but in reality use their followers to makes them selves rich. This holds true in life as in games, unfortunately the human race consists of way too many sheep minded people to figure this out.

      totally agreee with Satan, you have the typical shitty NC ‘b-team’ alliances in places such as Pure blind. Rank & File members are dirt poor, have to share a few overcrowded sanctum systems, while those purporting to be thier leaders (often sounding and behaving like annoying frat-boys when then occasionally log into TS for fleet ops) can afford to lose supercaps (which they never put to good use) while having a new fully fitted one ready a few days later.

    I’m disagreeing.
    Leaders who build own huge empire was tough and set tough discipline. Genghis Khan at example.
    In fact, actually necessary use both ways – tough and soft.

    Ok I’m reading this article… Here many useful things but no system. If u want give a people your experience in more useful and available form – u need set a clear distinction a problem and organize your knowledge.

    If you are a leader of this calibur and are interested in a project that is throwing this type of organization into EVE, you should consider leadership positions in Apolitical.

    Open book policy
    Corporate charter (constantly updated by all members in the group)
    Everyone has responsibilities and provides services to the group and everyone benefits from these.

    I’m sick and tired of the dog-kicking “WTF IS THAT FIT YOU STUPID FUCKTARD?” leaders.

    Lets bring some respectable leaders into this game.

    This article fails to recognize the most important choice you have to make for your corporation:

    Will it be one that’s social to have fun together or will it be one that wants to “win”. No matter what.

    The socials can be highly succesful and the players that play to win can lose it all, but those two breeds of players don’t mix very well and you should make the choice what kind of group you want to be.

    Identify why your corpmates play eve and adjust your corp to that.
